A fridge or freezer motor stays warm all day in a hot coastal house, and that steady heat turns the space behind it into a favourite nest for the smaller roaches.

In a small traditional kitchen the fridge stands against a mud-brick wall, so the warm gap behind it and the cracks in the wall become one hiding place: hard to see into, easy to breed in.

Water before food

What you see at night

The few you catch by torchlight on the mud-brick wall at night are a small minority. The rest sit deep inside the cracks, so the number you see says nothing about the number that is hidden.
