Ant control in Al Shuhada Makkah

Al Shuhada is an old quarter hemmed between mountains at Makkah's northern entrance, with buildings pressed close on naturally fissured rocky ground. Ants exploit the cracks and tight gaps between blocks to travel unseen, so treatment here means mapping narrow trails precisely and sealing shared spaces between structures.

  • Targeted, not broadcast

Product goes into cracks and runways, never sprayed across open surfaces.

  • Told before we start

What we will use, where it goes, and what to cover or move before we arrive.

  • A follow-up visit

We return after the first treatment, because what survives it does not show on the day.

  • Homes and businesses

Apartments and villas, and kitchens and stores that need a record of each visit.

Why they keep coming back in Al Shuhada

Ants here move along natural stone fissures rather than through pipes, making the trails easier to track but the nests harder to reach because they sit deeper in the rock. The method is set out in full on the full Ant control page.

The first reason

Natural stone fissures act as ready made trails

The fractured rocky ground gives ants thousands of pre made pathways without the need to tunnel horizontally. Bait travels faster through these fissures, but surface treatment alone cannot reach the deep nests beneath the ageing foundations.

The second reason

Seasonal moisture flows down from the mountains

Wadi Al Zahir and water from Jabal Al Shahid leave the soil damp around the buildings. Ants seek moisture before food, so treatment must include drying the perimeter before placing bait on the soil.

The third reason

Buildings are pressed tightly together with narrow gaps

The old district has walls that touch, with only hand width gaps between blocks. Ants cross these gaps easily from one home to the next, so treating a single flat may fail if the shared spaces and party walls remain untreated.

Landmarks of Al Shuhada

Treatment begins at Hajj Street where shops and markets draw ants, then follows trails upward past Al Shuhada Square and into the residential zones, focusing on the perimeter around Thaniyat Al Bayda where the rocky ground is most fractured.

Before treatment

The species and the trail decide the bait

Natural rocky ground fractures into a network of cracks that hold moisture in the soil. Water from rain runs down from Jabal Al Shahid and Jabal Al Barud in winter and spring, flowing through the district.

Small ants on spilled sugar across a pale surface

The sweet feeders

Sweet feeding ants in Al Shuhada gather around exposed food and waste in the narrow street, then climb to flats through walls and the gaps between buildings.

Ants around a greasy patch beside a hob

The grease and protein feeders

Grease seeking ants extract oils from waste at the small eateries and shops on Hajj Street, then carry them back to nests deep beneath the old foundations.

A line of ants running along the base of a wall

The trail and its direction

The trails here are clear because the quarter is tight and ants use the same natural cracks, making it easier to follow lines from the surface down into the gaps between walls.

Moisture before food

Moisture from seasonal floods and damp stone fissures leave soil ready for ants year round, especially after winter rains when the earth stays wet.

Loose soil between the slabs of an outdoor path

The nest outside the building

Nests outside the buildings sit beneath the close set foundations and under the rocky ground itself, where moisture and protection from heat and birds meet.

Winged ants on a window ledge

Winged ants

Winged ants appear in spring and autumn when moisture is high, concentrating on damp cracks to exit and mate.

How we work

  1. 1

    Inspect and follow the trail

We follow the line from where you see it to where it enters, and establish the species, what it is feeding on and the moisture keeping the nest close.

  2. 2

Matched bait placed on the trail

We choose the matrix from the feeding preference and place it on the trail itself, leaving the trail intact so the workers carry it to the queen and the brood.

  3. 3

Treat the perimeter and close the ways in

An external treatment at the wall base and the openings, and we point out the cracks, pipe entries and any branch touching the building.

  4. 4

    The follow-up visit

We come back once the bait has worked through the nest, check the trail is gone, and look for a satellite nest if a new line has appeared.

What ant control includes

  • A technician inspecting with a flashlight

Following the trail to its source

Species, entry point and the direction of the nest, established before anything is applied.

  • A gloved hand applying bait into a joint

    Bait matched to the colony

Sugar or protein according to what the workers are carrying, placed on the trail rather than near it.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

    An external perimeter treatment

A band at the wall base and the outside openings, with the indoor trail left unsprayed so it keeps carrying bait.

  • A metal floor drain

    Moisture points and entries

Condensate lines, sink surrounds, weep holes and pipe entries, which are what keeps a nest against the building.

  • A clean kitchen counter after treatment

    Aftercare instructions

What not to wipe until the bait has been taken, what to cover, and when normal cleaning can resume.

  • The visit report being written on a clipboard

    A scheduled follow-up

A set date to check the nest and re-bait anywhere still active.

What is different about Al Utaybiyah Sub-Municipality

Al Utaybiyah sub municipality covers the old districts north of the Grand Mosque: the hillside quarters of Al Hajun, Al Utaybiyah and Al Bayban, Al Zahir and Al Shuhada at the northern entrance, and the newer Al Zahra, Al Diyafah and An Nuzhah westward. Its building stock is among the oldest in Makkah, stone houses on the hills, packed apartment blocks and sewers decades old, threaded with crowded markets like the Utaybiyah souq and furnished flats that fill in the pilgrim seasons. Wadi Al Zahir and Wadi Al Tanim carry storm water through it, and industrial workshops line Hajj Street.

Questions about this district

Is the ant coming from a flat above or from neighbours?

In the old quarter flats are pressed tight and walls are thin, so ants cross the gaps between them easily. The source cannot be known without following the trails outside the building. The main colony may rest under the shared foundation, which means treating the outer perimeter is essential.

Do the cracks in the rocky ground hold active nests?

Ants favour stone fissures because they offer natural shelter, but the main colony usually lies beneath the foundation. The cracks are just trails and temporary food stores. Treating the cracks will slow ants but will not kill the queen.

Will treating the gaps between my walls and my neighbour's walls stop them?

The gaps between walls must be treated, but this will not stop ants if the nest lies under the shared foundation or under the street. Only thorough outer treatment can block new arrivals.

The mountains close by, do ants come straight down from there?

Jabal Al Shahid and Jabal Al Barud are very near, but ants do not move from mountain to buildings unless food draws them. Seasonal floods carry ants towards homes in autumn and winter, but permanent colonies live under the building bases.

Will surface spraying alone stop ants from the rocks beneath?

No. Natural rock beneath the foundation holds deep nests. Bait reaches that depth only when workers carry it from outside down into the interior. Surface spray alone will repel ants but will not end the problem.

When will ants return after we treat the rocky ground?

If outer treatment is not complete, ants will return within weeks. The stone fissures shield nests from surface chemicals. We ensure bait reaches the queen in the depths before finishing.

How much does ant control in Al Shuhada cost?

It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Al Shuhada.
