Why they keep coming back in Yamamah

The ants here split between colonies feeding on shop waste at street level and separate colonies inside residential flats above, each following different trails. The method is set out in full on the full Ant control page.

The first reason

Shops and flats: separate ant pathways

Ants in shops run in different trails than ants in the flats above them. The bait that attracts greasy ants near a butcher does not work for sugar ants near a bakery. Each pathway and its colony must be identified and treated separately, or bait placed in one will fail in the other.

The second reason

Vacant plots: ant supply routes

The empty land between buildings creates perfect nesting sites and breeding ground. Ants nest in exposed soil and march from there to raid the nearby buildings. Treating these gaps stops the ant journey before it enters homes and shops.

The third reason

Foundations and fill: fertile soil

Rubble and compacted soil from construction hold moisture and hide deep nests. Ants here build chambers far below the surface, not just at ground level. Treatment needs deep penetration, not just surface spray, or the queen and brood remain untouched underground.

What is different about Al Sharai Sub-Municipality

Al Sharai is the eastern growth front of Makkah along King Faisal Road and the Taif road. Settled quarters sit beside recently renamed schemes where plots are still vacant and buildings are going up, so construction sites, fill and open excavations lie next to occupied homes. Wadi channels such as Wadi Mudarraja, Wadi Al Sharai and Wadi Al Mughammas carry flash floods after rain and dry out to damp silt, while dust blows off the open hills. Roadside shops, restaurants and warehouses line the Taif road, and to the east the area shades into villages, palm farms and springs.

Questions about this district

Can ants climbing from the shop below reach my flat?

Yes, if the seal between them is poor. Shops attract both greasy and sugar ants, and any that can climb reach the flat above. Sealing the gap between shop and flat is essential before treatment begins, or ants will simply move up as fast as they are killed below.

Why do ants return when only the shop is sprayed?

Because the main nest may be beneath the shop or in the vacant ground beside it. Spraying the shop stops visible insects, but the queen and brood stay safe underground. The colony simply waits below, then re-emerges once the spray dries.

Are the vacant plots near my building the main ant source?

Usually yes. Vacant land provides moisture, fertile soil and shelter from direct sun. Colonies grow there and march to the nearest occupied building to forage. Once a building is found, the ants remember the route and return constantly.

Is the type of ant in the shop different from the flat above?

They may be different species or separate colonies. Shops selling foodstuffs attract sugar and grease eaters. The flat attracts ants searching for moisture and animal protein. This changes which bait works and which fails in each space.

Will treating only my flat stop ants entering from the shop?

Only partially. If the shop remains untreated, ants keep searching and climbing. Real control requires treating the flat, the shop and the seal between them. The weakest point becomes the new entry path if one area is left out.

Does dust and earth from vacant plots hide the ant trails?

Yes. Dust and rubble cover the paths and make the colony harder to track. In Yamamah, the area must be cleared first before the trail can be followed back to the nest and the bait placed accurately.
