Why they keep coming back in Jaranah

On visits around Jaranah we have found rooms near the mosque turned around quickly for pilgrims staying a single night, with the same bedding put back into service before the next guest arrives. The method is set out in full on our Bed bug control service.

The first reason

Rooms let out for a single night near the miqat

Close to Al Jaranah Mosque, rooms are rented out to pilgrims for an hour or a night before they enter ihram, so the same bedding turns over several times in a day with little chance to air it or check it between guests.

The second reason

Scattered low houses, no shared walls

Jaranah's houses are low and spread out across farmland and open ground in the wadi, so there is no shared wall or lift to move bed bugs between them the way there is in Makkah's dense blocks. Here the insect usually arrives with a bed or wardrobe carried from one house to another.

The third reason

Farm rooms that fill only at harvest

Farms in the wadi bed and around the old wells keep basic rooms for workers during planting and harvest seasons, and the people sleeping in them change with the season. Those beds need as much attention as any bedroom in the main house, not less.

The places that decide the treatment

Open ground and farmland separate one Jaranah house from the next, with old wells still working in the wadi bed, so distance limits wall to wall spread and most infestations arrive with something carried in rather than travelling on their own.

In rooms rented out near the mosque for ihram changes, the mattress seam gets checked between one group of pilgrims and the next, because the turnover here is faster than in an ordinary bedroom.

Frame joints and screw holes

Beds in farm workers' rooms are often simple metal frames taken apart between seasons, so the joints and the screw holes get checked each time one is put back together.

In low houses close to the wadi bed, the wall behind the headboard gets checked too, because damp from the ground near the old wells can reach it.

What the bedding shows

With pilgrims and farm workers moving through so many of these rooms, a clear mark on the sheet or pillow is often what settles the question fastest, since checking time between guests is short.

Majlis seating in Jaranah's rural houses receives scattered visitors from nearby villages, so the upholstered chairs get the same check as the beds, not a lighter one.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

What is different about Al Sharai Sub-Municipality

Al Sharai is the eastern growth front of Makkah along King Faisal Road and the Taif road. Settled quarters sit beside recently renamed schemes where plots are still vacant and buildings are going up, so construction sites, fill and open excavations lie next to occupied homes. Wadi channels such as Wadi Mudarraja, Wadi Al Sharai and Wadi Al Mughammas carry flash floods after rain and dry out to damp silt, while dust blows off the open hills. Roadside shops, restaurants and warehouses line the Taif road, and to the east the area shades into villages, palm farms and springs.

Questions about this district

A room by the mosque is used for changing into ihram, does it need checking each time?

Yes. If several groups use the room in one day during the umrah season, the bedding and any seating in it need checking as often as a normal bedroom, because each group can leave something behind without anyone noticing straight away.

We store spare furniture in the old farm store by the well, does it need checking?

Yes. Stores near the old wells in the wadi bed stay damp for most of the year, and damp does not drive bed bugs away, it simply gives them a still place to sit inside stored furniture for months without being used or disturbed.

We take mats and blankets to Al Jaranah Park, do they need checking before they go back inside?

The risk from outdoors is small, but after a day at the park they should be aired and unfolded before they go back into the cupboard, because damp fabric folded away straight from the grass or sand gives anything caught inside it a dark place to sit.

A colleague moves into a rented room on Al Jaranah Road, should we check it first?

Yes. Rooms let out around the town change tenants from time to time as staff at the administrative centre come and go, and checking the mattress and frame before a new tenant moves in stops an infestation passing on from whoever lived there before, even where nothing is visible yet.

A farm worker sleeps in an annexe room only during the harvest, does it need checking after he leaves?

Yes. A room closed up between seasons does not clear itself just by being shut, so checking it after the worker leaves and before the next harvest stops any infestation reaching the next worker's bedding, or spreading to the family's own rooms nearby.

Wadi Al Jaranah runs close to a low storage room, does flooding raise the risk of bed bugs there?

The floodwater itself does not bring bed bugs in, but the damp and silt it leaves behind once it dries encourage them to stay inside the joints of any wooden furniture stored close to the ground, so checking that room after each rainy season is better than waiting until signs show.
