Why they keep coming back in Al Amwaj

A new home with old furniture

The house is new, but what fills it often is not. A whole German cockroach colony can travel in inside a used fridge or a cabinet moved from an older flat, so an infestation begins on day one in a kitchen that looks spotless and brand new.

The second reason

Ground disturbed by the plot next door

When building starts on a nearby plot, soil is turned over and old drainage runs are broken open, and the American cockroach living there moves to the closest occupied house. A finished villa beside an empty lot takes in that exodus before anyone else does.

In a coastal district like this, the water source is often outside the kitchen: a freshly planted garden on irrigation, condensation off the humidity, and gullies not yet sealed properly in a recent build. We trace that water, because a cockroach looks for it before it looks for food.

In a freshly fitted kitchen, the narrow gap behind the fridge is warm, dark and rarely cleaned, so it becomes the first place a cockroach settles out of sight.

A cockroach looks for water before it looks for food, and in a humid coastal district it finds it easily at the gullies, the garden irrigation and the condensation.

The large cockroaches you see at night near a door or a drain are American ones that came from outside; the small ones in the kitchen are a resident German colony.

Questions about this district

We just moved into a new villa, so where did they come from?

Most often they arrived with you. The German cockroach travels inside furniture, appliances and packing boxes from your previous home, then settles in the kitchen before you notice. That is why we start by checking those items, not by looking at how old the house is.

There is building work next door, does that bring cockroaches?

Yes. Digging foundations, turning the soil and cutting into drainage lines drive the American cockroach out of its hiding places in the ground, and it heads for the nearest house with water and shade. When that is happening nearby, we focus on the outside entry points: doors, gullies and service openings.

We live in a compound, can they come from the next unit?

They can. Units in a compound share walls and a single drainage network, so a cockroach can move between them through kitchen and bathroom pipes and cable openings. That is why we treat the unit while also sealing those crossing points; otherwise the problem simply returns from the neighbour.

Does our new garden on irrigation attract cockroaches?

Irrigation keeps the soil and the concrete joints around the house damp, and that is ready water for the American cockroach right beside the wall. It does not mean giving up the garden; it means sorting the drainage, keeping the irrigation lines off the walls, and sealing the gaps it uses to get inside.

Does the coastal humidity here make it worse?

It does. The high humidity near the sea keeps water sitting in corners and gullies for longer, which gives the cockroach a comfortable environment all year round. We deal with that by cutting the moisture sources inside the kitchen and bathroom alongside the targeted bait.

The drains in our new house sometimes smell, are they coming up through them?

A smell means the trap under the drain has dried out or the joint is not tight, and that is an open route for the American cockroach from the sewer network into the kitchen and bathroom. We close that route and place bait at the points where they climb up, not only on the floor.
