The aged buildings here are full of cracks around pipes and beneath the tiling, and their floor drains are old and poorly sealed. Those openings link the wall cavity straight to the kitchen, so we treat the crack itself, not the surface you happen to see.

Roadworks drive them indoors

When fresh asphalt covers the ground and the surface drains, the American cockroach loses its outdoor shelters and heads inside through drains and doorways. In this quarter we watch those particular entry points closely after every new stretch of paving is laid.

Touching walls, narrow lanes

Houses in these tight lanes share walls and pipe runs, so treating one home alone simply drives the cockroaches next door through the party wall and the connecting pipe. That is why we trace the pipe line rather than the boundary of a single house.

The quarter sits close to the Thuwal shoreline, so humidity stays high and the old floor drains rarely dry out. That damp is what the American cockroach breeds in, under tiling and near bathrooms, right through the year.

German cockroach

It settles in the damp seaside kitchens here, small and hidden in cupboard cracks and the cutlery drawer, and it rarely strays beyond the one kitchen it has claimed.

Appliance heat

A fridge motor or oven gives off warmth that offsets the cool coastal night, so cockroaches gather behind these appliances in the houses of the quarter.

The dark gap behind the fridge collects damp and food crumbs together, and it is the first thing we check in the old, cramped kitchens here.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, and the leaking old pipework and coastal damp keep it close to the bathroom and the kitchen.

What you see at night

When they head out at night toward the new lane lighting, it points to a nest nearby in a drain or wall, not just a stray from the street.

Did the cockroaches appear after the street was paved?

Often, yes. When asphalt covers the ground and the surface drains, cockroaches lose their outdoor shelters and move indoors through drains and doorways. We concentrate the treatment on those indoor entry points rather than spraying the open floor.

Does the sea air make cockroaches worse?

The high humidity near the Thuwal shore gives cockroaches the water they depend on more than food, and it keeps drains and corners damp. We deal with the sources of moisture and any leaks alongside the bait, so the problem does not simply return.

My drains are old, are they the source?
