An eye clinic or dental surgery sits on the ground or second floor, and patients from different places may carry bed bugs. Medical staff and clinic visitors may spread infestation from a hospital upward to the flat above. We need coordination between the clinic and the furnished flat in inspection and treatment.

Specialist hospitals stand close to small hotels and furnished flats

The Magrabi Eye Hospital and GNP Hospital are nearby, and staff and visitors circulate between hospital and hotel. Medical pressure on the district is high and may carry bed bugs from hospital to hotel and back. A small hotel may not notice early infestation until it is widespread.

Daily movement of patients, staff and visitors between buildings

A patient visits a clinic in the morning and sleeps in a furnished flat in the evening. A hospital worker sleeps in the flat and brings bed bugs from the hospital. Personal belongings and bags may move between buildings. Daily repeated contact easily spreads insects.

We start from what the staff reported, open the beds, lift the headboards and check the rooms either side and the ones above and below, then mark each room as affected, adjacent or clear.

Treatment outside occupied hours

Seams are vacuumed first, then steam or a targeted application goes onto the seams and joints, dust into the frame voids and behind the skirting, and gel bait through the kitchens and service areas. Nothing is broadcast over soft furnishings.

Sealing, and the operating routine

We close the skirting gap, the pipe penetration and the gap under the service corridor door, then agree with the staff that linen is bagged inside the room itself, and what gets reported the moment it is seen.

Follow-up, and putting the room back

We come back once the remaining eggs have hatched, read the monitors and open the bed a second time. A room returns to service on the result of that inspection, and the room number and both dates go into the log.

Can a patient staying at a clinic carry bed bugs to the flat above?

Yes, very likely. A patient may come from another hospital or a home with bed bugs, and sleep in the furnished flat for a night or two and deposit bed bugs. We need weekly inspection of flats below clinics.

Can medical staff bring bed bugs from the hospital to their flat?

Yes. A worker sleeps in the furnished flat and works at the hospital, and may carry bed bugs via clothes or a bag. The risk is higher than a casual guest because they use the same bed every night.

Is treating the flat alone without treating the clinic below an incomplete solution?

Yes, very much so. If the clinic is infested, bed bugs climb daily. We need to treat clinic and flat together with coordination between teams.
