Why they keep coming back in Al Quraiyat

The first reason

High-density flats above commercial premises

Every block in Al Quraiyat has a shop or restaurant at street level with flats stacked above. The restaurant washes dishes and floors almost hourly. Water drips onto the shared foundation and shared pipes. A flat on the third floor carries mosquitoes directly from the restaurant beneath it. The shared plumbing connects every flat to every other.

The second reason

One entrance and many shared paths

One building houses sixty flats or more. One entrance, one stairwell, one lift. Air flows between flats through the stair and between doors. A mosquito enters a healthy flat from a neighbour's flat without anyone noticing. Treatment of one flat alone cannot work.

The third reason

King Khalid Road and late-night shops

King Khalid Road runs through the heart of Al Quraiyat. Shops and restaurants on the road open from dawn until very late at night. Water, crowds and light attract mosquitoes to Al Quraiyat. The street never dries.

The district lies close to the port and refinery. Sea humidity is consistently high. Streets are narrow and shops and restaurants are crowded along King Khalid Road and Al Falah Road, operating from dawn into the evening.

We walk the perimeter, the roof, the garden, the meter chambers and the condensate runs, record everything that holds water, and read the species from the breeding site and the time of biting.

Remove the water that can go

Empty, invert, cover: saucers, containers, old tyres and roof gullies. Every point that disappears is a treatment that never needs repeating.

Larval treatment, then the resting surfaces

Water that cannot be drained is treated so the larva never completes, then a residual goes under planting, beneath outdoor furniture and along low shaded walls.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the generation that was in the water on the first visit has completed, review every point we recorded and re-treat where needed.

Our flat is on the third floor with a restaurant directly below. Does its water reach us?

Yes, certainly. Restaurant wash water drips onto the shared foundation and shared pipes. Mosquitoes lay eggs in the shared pipes and gaps. They rise up to the upper flats searching for hosts.

Does each flat need separate treatment or can we treat adjacent flats together?

You cannot treat one flat and leave the one beside it. Adjacent flats must be treated together. The restaurant below you must be treated as part of your treatment.

The shared bathroom serves several flats and has constant water. Is that a source?

Yes. The shared bathroom is full of water and poor drainage. Eggs wait there. Everyone using the bathroom may carry mosquitoes back to their flat.

In Ramadan the flat is full of guests and the bathroom runs all the time. Does treatment work?

Treatment works but may need reinforcement in Ramadan. Much more water and high humidity means more mosquitoes. Pre Ramadan treatment is essential.

High population density in Al Quraiyat must mean more mosquitoes than other districts, yes?

Yes. High density means more water use, more bathroom use, more restaurants. Tightly packed flats spread mosquitoes between units easily.

Can the shared pipes between flats and the restaurant be treated from inside or only from outside?

Shared pipes can be treated from inside if there are inspection openings. If not, we apply treatment downwards and upwards and reach every opening and outlet.
