Gaps beneath new buildings and poorly sealed gates offer direct entry for animals moving down from the wadi. Each new phase of building leaves fresh opportunities for penetration until sealing is complete.

The second reason

Pooling moisture and seasonal drainage

Rainwater gathers on unpaved ground and incomplete schemes, drawing rodents and insects the snake follows. Water management after snake removal is crucial; left standing, it will draw another snake within weeks of the first being removed.

The third reason

The wadi and its seasonal flow

Wadi Saraf lies close to the district boundary, and snakes disperse from it during water flow and seasonal flooding. Open connections to drainage networks and foundation gaps along the wadi-facing edges provide direct pathways into the new homes.

The district lies on Wadi Saraf at moderate elevation above sea level. Seasonal rains gather in new, incomplete schemes, raising humidity and drawing rodent populations that snakes follow into the area.

How we work

Inspect and locate

We work the perimeter, the garden and the service rooms with a torch and a mirror, reading the tracks, the skins and the burrows to establish whether it is still on site and where it came in.

Safe removal

It comes out on a hook and tongs into a closed container and is released away from buildings where that is possible, with no chasing it around a room.

Close the routes, take away the shelter

A strip under the gate, sleeves around pipe entries, tight covers on the floor drains, and the blocks and palm fronds moved off the wall line.

Cut the food, then come back

We treat the rodents and the geckos on the perimeter, then return once that activity has settled to check the sealed points and look for any fresh track.

What is different about Al Umrah Sub-Municipality

Al Umrah sub municipality covers the north west of Makkah along the Madinah road and the old Jeddah road, from At Tanim and Masjid Aisha to An Nawwariyah. Its districts are the city's newest, villas and apartment blocks raised on wide schemes where large tracts in Al Umrah Al Jadidah, Al Fayha and Al Buhayrat remain vacant or under construction. Wadi Saraf and Wadi At Tanim run through it and rainwater gathers on unfinished schemes, ihram shops, restaurants and coach stops along the Madinah road serve a constant flow of pilgrims, and villas fill Al Hamra and Umm Al Jud.

Questions about this district

A snake entered a new villa in Al Umrah Al Jadidah. Is this a recurring problem?

New villas on wide plots are vulnerable if foundations are not sealed or if there are rodents in the garden. After removal, sealing and rodent treatment, recurrence is rare unless entry points remain open and rodent populations rebuild in neighbouring properties.

Our house is still under construction. How exposed are we to snakes while building is ongoing?

Incomplete sites are natural shelters for snakes, rodents and reptiles. Open gaps, scattered materials and uncovered trenches provide cover and food. Once construction ends and sealing is complete, risk drops markedly.

The street is unpaved and has standing water. Does this draw snakes?

Pooling water attracts rodents, insects, frogs and lizards, and snakes follow the food chain. Once the road is paved and water drains, the attraction drops substantially.

Wadi Saraf is very close to our home. Do snakes come from the wadi?

Wadis are natural snake sources, especially in the rainy season and during floods. However, a snake will not cross open ground unless it is following food. If there are no rodents near your home, snakes will not approach it.

If we remove the snake and treat the rodents, do we need to spray pesticide around the home?

Spray does not deter snakes. After removal, sealing and rodent control, the snake will not return. Continuous rodent monitoring is far more important than periodic spraying.

Our neighbour has not treated their property yet. Could a snake come to our house from theirs?

Snakes do not move between neighbouring homes unless there are open gaps between them. If your house is sealed and harbours fewer rodents than your neighbour's, snakes are unlikely to visit.
