Why they keep coming back in Al Fadl

In Al Fadl we see ants that move from a food shop into a flat above it through the gaps around vertical pipes running through the shared wall. The method is set out in full on the full Ant control page.

The first reason

Shop and flat share one building

Ants in a grocery shop find abundant sources in grains, oils and spills, and they climb the internal walls to reach the flats overhead. Treatment must cover the shop, the internal passages and the flat together, or ants return from below and the problem starts again.

The second reason

Shared pipes are the ant highway

In multi use buildings, pipes that link the storeys give ants a direct route from shop to flat. We coat these passages with repellent before placing bait, so the bait does not become a bridge for ants to travel the other way.

The third reason

Building gaps trap moisture and food

Al Fadl is still being built, and gaps between retail and residential units trap moisture and crumbs. We treat these cavities with a residual spray before sealing them, otherwise they become incubators for the next colony.

The species and the trail decide the bait

The district is bounded by the Jeddah Makkah Expressway to the south and Old Makkah Road to the north, with vacant plots between buildings that hold moisture and construction debris.

Sweet feeding ants arrive in Al Fadl shops through food spills, then climb into flats above via shared pipes and cavities, looking for sugary residues in kitchens and storage.

The grease and protein feeders

Grease seeking ants are common in bakeries, restaurants and shops that handle oils, and they move faster toward fatty food sources than sweet feeders do.

The trail and its direction

Ant trails in Al Fadl are mostly vertical, climbing from shop to flat, and horizontal between flats on the same storey if pipes are shared between units.

Moisture before food

Moisture collects in the gaps between shop and flat and in the dark passages below, which makes ants settle there before they climb looking for food above.

The nest outside the building

Ant nests outside the building are dug into the exposed soil between Al Fadl buildings and in vacant plots beside the Jeddah Makkah Expressway, then workers climb to the shop and flat from there.

Winged ants

Winged ants appear in Al Fadl in large numbers in spring and autumn, moving between nests across the Jeddah Makkah Expressway and the open streets of the district.

We follow the line from where you see it to where it enters, and establish the species, what it is feeding on and the moisture keeping the nest close.

We choose the matrix from the feeding preference and place it on the trail itself, leaving the trail intact so the workers carry it to the queen and the brood.

Treat the perimeter and close the ways in

An external treatment at the wall base and the openings, and we point out the cracks, pipe entries and any branch touching the building.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the bait has worked through the nest, check the trail is gone, and look for a satellite nest if a new line has appeared.

Following the trail to its source

Species, entry point and the direction of the nest, established before anything is applied.
Bait matched to the colony

Sugar or protein according to what the workers are carrying, placed on the trail rather than near it.
An external perimeter treatment

A band at the wall base and the outside openings, with the indoor trail left unsprayed so it keeps carrying bait.
Moisture points and entries

Condensate lines, sink surrounds, weep holes and pipe entries, which are what keeps a nest against the building.

What is different about South Sub-Municipality

The South sub municipality runs from the edge of Old Makkah Road down to Al Khumrah and the southern corniche. Dense residential districts sit beside new subdivisions such as Al Sanabil and Al Taawun, warehouse fringes such as Al Saruriyah and Al Sarawat, and an old seaside settlement at Al Quzayn. Open stormwater channels cross the housing, and the warehouses, the vegetable and livestock markets and the nearby Islamic Port and Industrial City give pests shelter, food and year round humidity. Pressure is greatest in the older quarters, where drainage networks are ageing.

Questions about this district

The bakery shop is on the ground floor and we are on the third. Can ants reach us?

Yes, easily. Ants climb external walls and vertical pipes. We have seen them move from a bakery on the first floor to flats on the second and third storeys. Treating the shop alone will not stop them entering the flats.

Will treating our flat stop ants from the clothing shop below us?

No, not if ants are coming from the shop. The flat alone is not enough. We need to treat the shared passages and the points where ants climb. Even if you spray your flat, ants will return from below.

Does the type of shop below the flat affect the number of ants?

Very much. A food shop brings far more ants than a service shop or office. Restaurants, cafes and bakeries below a flat double the pressure.

Can we seal the gaps around pipes without chemical treatment?

Sealing alone is not enough if ants are already present. The gap must be sprayed first to kill the trail, then sealed, otherwise you trap ants inside the wall.

How often should we treat Al Fadl when the district is new and building continues?

In Al Fadl where construction is ongoing, treatment needs regular follow up because exposed soil and new cavities offer new routes for ants to establish constantly.

Does the Technical College and Medical City near Al Fadl increase ants in the neighbourhood?

Cafeterias and restaurants in the Medical City and College provide food sources, which increases pressure on nearby residential areas, but the main issue here is ongoing building and exposed soil.

How much does ant control in Al Fadl cost?
