The first reason

The open ground makes the source

The American cockroach in Al Fadl is not born in your kitchen. It breeds in the open plot next door, in the rubble and the trapped damp, then crosses into the flat through drains and door gaps. Treat only the inside and the source keeps resupplying it.

Al Fadl's floor-units pile up over a single drainage stack, so the German cockroach climbs from one level to the next along the same kitchen run. Treating one flat while the rest of the building goes untreated leaves the road back wide open.

In Al Fadl a finished block, one still under construction and a waiting plot often sit side by side. The movement of workers and debris carries egg cases and roaches from the site into an occupied flat. That is why we inspect the ground around a building, not just its walls.

The scattered vacant plots between buildings trap rainwater in Jeddah's poorly draining ground, so they stay damp for weeks. That damp feeds American cockroach colonies right beside the doors of the ground-floor flats.

It lives in the kitchens of Al Fadl's blocks and moves between floor-units along the shared drainage pipe, so one infested level is enough to reach the flats above and below it.

This is the larger one, arriving from the vacant plots and the neighbouring drains. It is the roach you see crossing the yard at night, heading for the doors of the ground-floor flats.

Appliance heat

In Al Fadl's small flats the fridge and oven give off a steady warmth that draws the German cockroach to the back of the appliance, where it hides and breeds out of sight.

The narrow gap behind the fridge gathers heat, crumbs and damp all at once, so it is the first place we check in an Al Fadl kitchen: it is the colony's favourite hideout.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, so we trace leaks under the kitchen and bathroom before we ever look for exposed food.

Questions about this district

There's a vacant plot beside my building. Is it the source?

Often yes, for the large American cockroach. Open ground collects rubble and rainwater and becomes a shelter, and from there the roaches crawl into the lower floors. We treat the entry points and the ground around the building, not the kitchen alone.

Why do the big roaches surge after rain?

Jeddah's rain fills the vacant plots and the drains, so the American cockroaches leave their underground hideouts looking for somewhere dry. The nearest dry place is the ground-floor flats. At that point we focus on barriers and drain openings rather than the worktops.

I treated my flat but my neighbour in the building did not. Will it work?

The numbers will drop, but the German cockroach travels flat to flat through the shared pipe and the wall joints. We seal your flat's openings and place bait along the crossing routes, though coordinating the treatment with the other floor-units gives the most lasting result.

My flat is on the ground floor. Is my situation different?

Yes. The ground floor sits closest to the open plots and the outdoor drains, so it meets the American cockroach coming in from outside far more than the upper floors do. We add treatment of the outer boundary and the pipe entries to your flat's plan.

There's a building going up next to us. Does it bring roaches?

Building sites in Al Fadl leave rubble and standing water that draw roaches, and the movement of workers and materials can carry egg cases into your flat. We inspect the side facing the site and tighten the window and door openings nearest to it.

How do you stop roaches moving between floors?

We follow the shared drainage pipe and the electrical channels that link the floor-units, and close their openings at each level with bait and seals. That cuts the route upward, instead of treating every flat on its own and waiting for the next wave.
