Why they keep coming back in Al Aziziyah

We have noticed that infestations in the Makarona Road blocks often start in a rooftop room rented to restaurant staff, then travel down into the flats below over following months. The method is set out in full on what Bed bug control involves.

The first reason

Makarona Road's blocks sit directly over adjoining shops

Along Makarona Road, flats are stacked over shops and restaurants with barely a gap between them, so neighbouring units often share a back wall and a single staircase. That means checking the flat next door matters as much as checking your own.

The second reason

Villas in the numbered sections are newer builds

The villas of Al Aziziyah's numbered sections are newer than the ageing blocks along Makarona Road, so their furniture carries less inherited infestation from a string of past tenants, but their closeness to those flats still means second hand pieces move easily between the two.

The density of restaurants brings a resident workforce

So many restaurants, cafes and food stores in one district mean staff housed in small rooms above the shops or on the rooftops, moving with their own bedding and belongings between them. That brings infestations up into the flats above from a source the household itself never created.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

What is different about Al Aziziyah Sub-Municipality

The Al Aziziyah sub municipality takes in the established heart of northern Jeddah, from the Al Hamra corniche on the Red Sea to Al Rehab east of King Abdullah Road. Its buildings date back decades, mostly mid rise apartment blocks over shops and closely packed restaurants along Makarona Road, Tahliah Street and Palestine Street, alongside villas and hotel towers near the shore. Sea humidity is high in the western districts, plumbing and drainage in the older blocks are ageing, and food outlets, hospitals and irrigated gardens are everywhere, conditions that favour cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes and rodents throughout the year.

Questions about this district

We bought secondhand bedding from a popular market stall here, does it need checking?

The popular markets scattered through Al Aziziyah sell secondhand textiles and bedding of unknown origin, and folded fabric like that can carry eggs or a live bug tucked into a seam. Open it out and steam it before it goes anywhere near a bedroom.

Restaurant staff from downstairs live in a room on our roof, does it need its own check?

Yes. The rooftop room is a separate household with its own bedding, and although it sits on the same building, its closeness to your flat through the stairwell means it should be checked on its own, not assumed clear because your own flat is.

The food store below our building gets daily deliveries of boxes, do they carry bed bugs up?

Boxes stacked in a shop storeroom can shelter a bed bug passing through from another source, but they do not climb the stairs on their own. The real risk only starts if a box of that kind enters your flat and sits near where someone sleeps.

Moving from a Makarona Road flat to a villa in the numbered sections, will bed bugs travel with us?

Any bed or sofa you move from the old flat should be inspected and steam treated before it enters the new villa, because bed bugs travel with the piece of furniture itself, not with the building. A clean villa that receives one infested piece becomes infested too.

We lay out cushions and blankets in Tihama Park in the evening and bring them home, do they need checking?

The park itself is not a source of bed bugs, but cushions and blankets spread on the grass and touching shared benches or other picnic bedding can carry one across. Airing them in the sun and shaking them out well is enough before they go back into a bedroom.

Restaurant delivery riders rest in our building's entrance between orders, does that put us at risk?

Sitting in a communal entrance is lower risk than actually entering a flat, because bed bugs need direct contact with bedding or upholstered seating to move on, and a hard entrance bench gives them nowhere settled to hide.
