Why they keep coming back in Al Furusiyah

The first reason

New furniture and the moment it is unloaded

Most blocks and villas in Al Furusiyah were handed over within the same year, and furniture arrives from showrooms on delivery runs that serve more than one address a day, which makes the moment a piece is set down at the door the real chance to check it before it reaches the bedroom.

The second reason

Temporary rooms on the edge of a build site

Vacant plots and active building sites still sit among the villas here, and a worker or a guard sometimes sleeps in an unfinished annex or half fitted room close to the occupied house, giving bed bugs a short, unnoticed route from that temporary bed into the main one.

Before treatment

The places that decide the treatment

Much of Al Furusiyah has only recently been handed over, and villas and flats still sit beside vacant plots and construction sites, which keeps workers and furniture moving between addresses on an almost daily basis.

Bed frames in the new villas here are often imported with fine metal joints, and we check every screw hole in them before closing the file.

Many bedrooms here back onto a recently built external wall that can still hold some damp, so we allow for that while checking the headboard.

In these new Al Furusiyah homes, bite marks often turn up on sheets used for only a few weeks, so we read them as evidence despite how new the bedding is.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

What is different about Taybah Sub-Municipality

Taybah sub municipality covers the newly built districts of north east Jeddah along Al Haramain Road and Asfan Road. New villas and apartment buildings stand among vacant plots, building sites and half finished subdivisions. Al Hamdaniyah is the oldest and densest part with its markets and shops, while Al Furusiyah, Al Bashair, Al Rahmaniyah, Al Falah and Al Salihiyah are mostly recent. The ground is inland and away from the sea, dry and dusty, rest houses, camps and stables on the fringes draw flies and crawling insects, and constant digging and construction stirs rodents out of the empty plots.

Questions about this district

A stable hand from the equestrian club sometimes stays over, should we check his room?

Yes. Any bed used by someone who normally sleeps elsewhere is worth checking on its own, along the mattress seam and the edge of the cover, once he has left, because that is the fastest way bed bugs enter without turning up in the rest of the house.

We have a rest house at the edge of the district for weekend gatherings, could that bring bed bugs home?

Mats and bedding that move between the house and the rest house carry any infestation from whichever place has one, so it is worth checking them after every return, especially if the rest house also hosts guests from outside the family.

We store old furniture in the villa's unfinished annex, does it need checking before it comes indoors?

Yes. An unfinished annex can end up hosting workers for a break during the day, and any piece of furniture that sat there for a while is worth checking along its seams and corners before it goes into the main bedroom.

We bought a show villa with its display furniture, could it carry bed bugs from earlier visitors?

Show villas are viewed by more than one family before sale, and any original piece such as the bed or the sofa is worth a full check before you rely on it in the bedroom.

Our building's flats were all handed over together and everyone is moving in this week, is that a risk?

When several families move in around the same time, furniture passes through a shared entrance and lift more often, so we check each flat on its own before its furniture goes in, to stop any infestation crossing between them.

The vacant plot next door is sometimes used for occasion tents, should we check the rented furnishings?

Rented occasion furnishings are used at more than one gathering before they reach you, so it is worth checking their edges and seating before you store them at home or use them close to a bedroom.
