Why they keep coming back in Al Jamiah

The first reason

Pilgrim hotels stand right beside long-term flats

In Al Jamiah, permanent flats and budget hotels built for pilgrims often share the same street frontage, sometimes the same building, so a long-term resident can sleep one floor above a guest staying a single night. That mix means each floor gets checked by who lives there, not simply by its distance from the stairwell.

The second reason

Two main roads cut the district into blocks

King Khalid Road and Al Masjid Al Haram Road cut Al Jamiah into separate blocks, and the buildings within each block tend to cluster around one shared main entrance. That means we can usually clear an entire block through one stairwell, rather than crossing between blocks that sit further apart than they look on a map.

The third reason

Older blocks near the district's namesake site

The oldest blocks in Al Jamiah stand near the site that gave the district its name, and their flats are tighter, with kitchens and bathrooms set closer to the bedrooms than in the newer towers near Makkah Mall. That shorter distance gives bed bugs a quicker route between rooms.

In Al Jamiah's blocks beside pilgrim hotels, the mattress seam is the first thing we open, since it shows the difference between bedding used by one family and bedding turned over between guests.

The older blocks near the site that gave Al Jamiah its name still hold more wooden bed frames, so their screw holes and joints need a closer check than the newer furniture found in flats around Makkah Mall.

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

One worker lies down the moment the other gets up, with barely a gap between them, so the mattress carries body heat and contact far more often than an ordinary bedroom. We check that kind of bed on a shorter cycle than the rest of the flat.
