In these flats the fridge is pushed into a tight, warm corner with no ventilation, which makes the gap behind it the safest place the German cockroach has to hide and breed.

Water before food

Because Makkah's air is dry, the cockroach looks for moisture first: a leaking water heater, air-conditioning run-off and the bathroom drain in this district matter more to it than crumbs of food.

What you see at night

One or two cockroaches on the kitchen wall at night in a furnished flat mean a colony hidden in the shared pipe or behind a neighbouring appliance.

Questions about this district

I live in a furnished flat. Is second-hand furniture a source?

Often, yes. Furniture and appliances moved into furnished flats can carry eggs stuck to their drawers, joints and undersides. We inspect these pieces first, and treat their cracks and seams rather than settling for a spray across the floor.

I let my flat to pilgrims each season. How do I stop them returning?

The frequent change of guests keeps bringing cockroaches back in with luggage. We treat ahead of the season and concentrate on the kitchen, the bathroom and the pipe entries, and advise sealing cracks and closing the gaps around appliances between one letting and the next.

My neighbour treated his flat and they appeared in mine. Why?

Because you share the same pipes and light wells. When only one flat is treated, the cockroaches move through them into the flat next door. Treatment works far better when it covers the shared crossing points in the building rather than one flat on its own.

The kitchen is small and the appliances are packed in. Does that make it worse?

Yes. A fridge, water heater and oven crammed together create warm, dark corners that are hard to reach, and that is ideal ground for the German cockroach. We treat these gaps directly and advise leaving a ventilation gap behind each appliance.

Does being close to the facilities of Al Aziziyah bring cockroaches into the district?

The restaurants and facilities of Al Aziziyah do raise the pressure from the American cockroach coming up from outside drainage, especially on ground floors. We concentrate on sealing entry points and the inspection chambers close to the building before treating inside.
