Why they keep coming back in Al Shuruq

Visits here tend to show that furniture carried up from a ground floor shop into the flat above it carries more wear than its condition on the shop floor suggested. The method is set out in full on how we approach Bed bug control.

The first reason

Shops on Palestine Road share a stairwell with the flats above

In the buildings along Palestine Road, the shop entrance and the residential stairwell are often the same space, so when a ground floor tenant changes or brings in new stock, that shared doorway is the first thing we check, before the bedroom itself.

The second reason

An older core sits against a newer subdivision

The pocket bordering Al Nakhil is newer construction with villas that have not seen much tenant turnover, while blocks nearer Al Wahah and Al Tawfiq carry decades of tenants moving in and out, so what we look for changes depending on which end of the district we are in.

The third reason

Second hand furniture clusters along King Abdullah Branch Road

Along King Abdullah Branch Road, which marks the southern edge, second hand furniture and mattress shops cluster together, so a bed bought near that boundary has usually passed through more than one home before it reaches a bedroom further inside the district.

That layering means furniture moved out of a ground floor shop passes right by the residential stairwell, so on many visits here the shared entrance gets checked before the bedroom does.

The district lies east of Haramain Road between Al Wahah and Al Tawfiq, with Palestine Road cutting through its commercial strip and King Abdullah Branch Road marking its southern edge, where newer plots meet older blocks.

In Al Shuruq, a mattress from a shop near the southern boundary gets checked to a different standard than one from an older flat near Al Tawfiq, because the seam tells a different history.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

We rent above a household goods shop on Palestine Road, does its stock affect us?

It matters if that stock includes soft furnishings or second hand pieces moving in and out regularly, because the shared stairwell puts our entrance close to where those items pass, so we check it in the same visit.

The handover team for our new villa near Al Nakhil uses one truck for several villas, does that need checking?

A truck moving between several handovers in the same wave sometimes carries packing materials or spare pieces from one address to another, so if we notice that with our own delivery, we give the new bedding and furniture a quick check before use.

Tenants change often in our older building near Al Tawfiq, does that put our flat at risk?

Fast tenant turnover in older blocks usually means furniture arrives and leaves more than once a year, and if our flat shares a stairwell or a service lift with those units, the joints and seams matter more here than in a newer building.

Clearance sales like that usually pull pieces from several sources into one space for a short time, so if we bought something close to its closing, we prefer to check it before it comes into the house.

Work on other floors can disturb insects hiding in old walls, and they look for a new hiding place, sometimes reaching a treated flat through pipe gaps or a shared electrical panel, so we recheck the shared wall after any nearby renovation.

Small settling cracks appeared in our new villa near Al Nakhil, could they hide bed bugs before furniture even arrives?

Early settling cracks are rarely the direct cause, since bed bugs travel in with furniture and bedding rather than through the building's own walls, but we still check any gap close to the bed frame or the headboard.
