Why they keep coming back in Barakah

Most of the households we visit in Barakah moved their beds in within the past few months from somewhere else in the city, so the first inspection usually starts on furniture nobody has checked before. The method is set out in full on the full Bed bug control page.

The first reason

Furniture that arrived from an earlier home

Because the land here was sold and renamed only recently, most families move in with beds and sofas brought from a previous rental elsewhere in Makkah rather than furniture bought locally, so the first check has to trace where each piece came from before it looks at the room around it.

The second reason

Building never really stops next door

A finished house here often stands beside a plot still under construction or a lot marketed for sale and left empty, so labourers or site guards using a nearby shelter can be a source of bedding the household itself never brought in, something a fully settled street does not have to consider.

The third reason

Farms sit right against the new walls

Barakah's plots back straight onto the working farms in the bed of Wadi Al Sharai rather than another street of houses, so the rear rooms and boundary walls start from the edge of irrigated ground instead of a neighbour's fence, which changes where the check begins.

The places that decide the treatment

Jabal Laban rises to the south and vacant plots still sit between the finished homes, so furniture across the district varies in age far more than the wall spacing between houses would suggest.

In a house whose family only recently moved in, the mattress seam that arrived with them is the first thing worth opening, before anything else in the room.

Frame joints and screw holes

Bed frames brought from an earlier home or back from a carpentry workshop nearby often carry joints and screw holes that have not been opened in years, and that is exactly where bed bugs like to sit.

Walls in Barakah are new and some are still drying out, so the headboard and the surface behind it get checked for damp paint or a small gap that could hide the insect.

What the bedding shows

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

What is different about Al Sharai Sub-Municipality

Al Sharai is the eastern growth front of Makkah along King Faisal Road and the Taif road. Settled quarters sit beside recently renamed schemes where plots are still vacant and buildings are going up, so construction sites, fill and open excavations lie next to occupied homes. Wadi channels such as Wadi Mudarraja, Wadi Al Sharai and Wadi Al Mughammas carry flash floods after rain and dry out to damp silt, while dust blows off the open hills. Roadside shops, restaurants and warehouses line the Taif road, and to the east the area shades into villages, palm farms and springs.

Questions about this district

Our plot still had a temporary workers' room, does the bedding inside need checking before we clear it?

Yes. Bedding left behind in a room that once housed site workers can carry bed bugs without any visible sign yet, so it is safer to have it checked, or replaced, before any part of it moves into the new house.

We rent farmland in Wadi Al Sharai and sleep there during harvest nights, does that bedding need checking?

Yes. Sleeping in a rest room on rented farmland is not the same as a permanent bedroom, and any bedding left there between seasons should be checked before it comes back into the main house.

We camp at the foot of Jabal Laban at weekends with bedding from home, does it need checking on return?

Yes. Bedding taken out for camping meets a very different environment from a bedroom, and anything it picks up outdoors, an insect or an egg caught in the folds, travels back into the house with it unless it is checked before it is stored again.

We send our children's wooden bed to a carpentry workshop in Al Said hamlet, does it need checking on return?

Yes. A carpentry workshop handles pieces from many different houses, and bed bugs can move between them through a single wooden frame, so the bed is worth checking before it goes straight back into a child's room.

Land agents visit our scheme every week and rest in a nearby guard room, does that room need checking?

Yes. A guard room that outside visitors use regularly needs its own periodic check separate from the rest of the house, especially if bedding is kept there for people to rest on between visits.

Our house is close to a rest stop on the expressway where lorry drivers sleep, does that raise the risk?

Being near a stop where many travellers spend the night does not raise the risk on its own, but it does make checking any secondhand bedding or temporary sleeping arrangement more worthwhile than it would be on a street with no passing traffic like this.
