The nearby channel is a damp reservoir for the American cockroach all year round. It travels from there through drainage pipes and floor openings into the buildings alongside it, which is why we treat the ground-level entry points as well as the inside of the unit.

My flat is on the ground floor near the channel, am I more exposed?

Ground-floor flats close to the channel meet the American cockroach first, because they are the nearest point it can climb to from the drainage. We concentrate on the bathroom and kitchen floor drains and the external door thresholds far more than we would on an upper floor.

A neighbour in my block treated theirs, so why do I still see them?

The German cockroach moves between flats in a block through the drainage stacks and the gaps around pipes. Treating one flat only pushes it into the next, so on the same vertical column it is far better to deal with the connected units together rather than one on its own.
