Why they keep coming back in Al Rawdah

Hotels and furnished flats open to a new occupant again and again, and each one brings a suitcase and a food supply from somewhere else. The German cockroach travels in with the luggage, so an infestation you thought was cleared is quietly reseeded by the next arrival.

Because the district is built on sloping rock, the drains are cut into the stone and run stepped downhill. The American cockroach climbs up from that damp network and from the inspection chambers, reaching the ground-floor units before anyone spots it in a kitchen upstairs.

Near the Haram the buildings press together and share walls and pipes, and the ground floor is often a restaurant serving pilgrims. Treating a single flat is not enough while the source sits in the kitchen next door or in the shop directly beneath you.

In a furnished unit the fridge is pushed back to the wall, and behind it collect the warmth of the coil and the crumbs of many short-stay guests, a corner no one ever cleans.

Water before food

Before food a cockroach needs water, and the bathrooms, the ablution areas and their leaking taps supply it in abundance, so we check for damp before anything else.

What you see at night

One cockroach on the kitchen wall at night usually means dozens hidden in the cracks, and in a unit whose guests keep changing it goes unreported until it has grown.

We focus the treatment on the fixed hiding places in the kitchen and bathroom rather than on the guest, and we seal the cracks that luggage brings roaches to. It helps to unpack food boxes in one spot that is easy to check, and to keep suitcases away from the warmth of the fridge.

There is a restaurant serving pilgrims on the ground floor. Does that affect us?

Yes. The restaurant kitchen is a constant supply of food and warmth, and cockroaches climb from it up the shared pipework into the flats above. We treat the crossing points in the stairwells, light wells and around the pipes, and where possible we suggest booking the shop and the units for the same visit.

The building stands on the slope of Jabal Abi Qubais. Do roaches climb from the rock drains?

The American cockroach in particular favours the drains cut into the rock and the damp inspection chambers, and climbs out of them at night. We treat these openings and place barriers at the drain outlets and pipe exits on the lower floors before the roaches can reach the home.

The flat sits empty between seasons then fills up. Do roaches survive the empty spell?

Yes. They hold out for weeks on small residues and the damp of the bathroom, and then a sudden full flat exposes them. It is best to treat shortly before the season begins, so the nests are gone before the guests arrive rather than after they complain.

The neighbouring flats are furnished and change hands constantly. Is treating ours alone enough?

It may hold for a while, but the shared walls and pipes make reinfestation likely from an occupied neighbouring unit that nobody is treating. We seal the crossing points between flats and recommend treating the adjoining units together whenever the owners agree.

The refuse room is shared by every floor. What do we do?

A shared refuse room is a supply of food and damp that draws in the roaches of the whole building. We treat it as a focal point, place bait at its entrance and its drain, and advise sealing the bags tightly and taking them out promptly so the infestation is not renewed from there.
