The modern villa kitchens are packed with built-in appliances: the fridge, oven and washer keep their corners warm, and that steady heat is what draws the cockroach to hide nearby.

A newly fitted kitchen leaves a narrow gap behind the fridge and the built-in units: warm, dark and rarely cleaned, and it is the first place we check in the scheme's homes.

Water before food

Before food, the cockroach looks for water: air-conditioning run-off, garden taps and the damp of ground-floor bathrooms in the new villas are enough, so we dry the water sources first.

Can second-hand furniture bring cockroaches into my new home?

Do the scheme's gardens and irrigation attract cockroaches?
