Questions about this district

Can cockroaches spread from the parade shops into our villa?

Yes, and it is the most common pattern we see here. Restaurant and grocer kitchens are a continuous source, and cockroaches cross the shared wall and pipework into the villas beside them. So we inspect the boundary and treat the crossing routes, not just your kitchen, otherwise they simply return from the same side.

We have just moved in with second-hand furniture, is that a risk?

It can be. A used piece of furniture or an old box can hide a German cockroach egg case that hatches in a clean new kitchen. We check those items and the space around them and bait the entry points, before the problem has a chance to spread through the villa.

The villa is brand new, so why are there cockroaches?

Being new does not keep them out. Fresh construction still has service voids around pipes that are not yet sealed, and the irrigated garden supplies water, so the American cockroach comes in from outside while the German arrives with furniture. The cause is an open route, not poor cleaning.

Does watering the villa garden have anything to do with it?

Yes. Regular irrigation in Makkah's dry climate keeps the soil damp around inspection chambers and the building's footing, and that moisture draws the American cockroach to the perimeter and then indoors. We treat the external entry points and advise keeping irrigation lines away from the walls.

Our villa has two floors, do cockroaches move between them?

They travel up the soil stacks and the vertical pipe voids that link the floors, so you can see signs in the ground-floor kitchen and an upstairs bathroom at once. We treat the villa as one unit and close the vertical routes between the storeys, rather than one floor in isolation.

A neighbour in the complex treated their villa, is that enough for us?

Not on its own. When a single villa is treated, cockroaches move to the unit next door through the shared walls and pipework across the plan. It is better to treat the adjoining villas and the boundary between them around the same time, so the infestation cannot simply shift between neighbours.
