Why they keep coming back in Al Shawqiyah

In Al Shawqiyah's wall-to-wall blocks, we often find that a treatment holding well in one flat does not last if the flat next door sits on the same run of pipework and stays untreated. The method is set out in full on how we approach Cockroach control.

The first reason

Pipework shared between flats

In densely stacked blocks, the drain and kitchen pipes pass through more than one flat, so the German cockroach travels up and down between neighbours through the pipe openings behind the sinks. That is why treating a single flat in isolation from the rest of the building rarely settles it.

The second reason

Demolition evicts what lives underground

As the Al Zohour settlements are redeveloped, old drains and sewer networks are dug open, and American cockroaches flee their homes underground in search of the nearest occupied building. More often than not, that building is your own standing home next to the works.

Homes built in stages

Many Al Shawqiyah homes have had rooms and extensions added over the years, leaving voids behind the walls and pipe joints that were never sealed tight. Those hidden cracks are exactly where the nests sit, out of sight and out of reach of any surface spray.

The former Al Zohour settlements are being demolished and rebuilt in stages, which opens up trenches and old sewer lines right beside occupied homes. That disturbance alone is enough to drive American cockroaches up out of the ground and into the nearest lived-in kitchen.

It thrives in Al Shawqiyah's small, adjoining kitchens and moves between flats through the shared pipework, so you can see it in your flat even though it never came through your door.

Larger, and it climbs up from the gully drains and sewers. You see more of it near the demolition and redevelopment sites in the Al Zohour extensions, where the old networks are being opened up.

Appliance heat

Kitchens here are cramped and the appliances sit close together, so the warmth of the fridge and the water heater gives the cockroach a warm hiding place to breed in all year round.

In small flats the fridge is pushed back against the wall, and the narrow gap behind it becomes a nest, the first place we check when we arrive.

Water before food

A cockroach looks for water before food, and the leaks in the old pipework of Al Shawqiyah's blocks keep it near the sinks and bathrooms even when the kitchen is spotless.

What you see at night

The one you catch on the wall at night is one of many hidden in the cracks, and seeing them by day in Al Shawqiyah is usually a sign the nest is overcrowded.

Questions about this district

My neighbour treated his flat and the roaches came to us. Why?

In adjoining blocks the flats share the same pipe runs, so when one side is treated the cockroaches move off towards the nearest water and food, which can be your flat. That is why we check and treat the shared pipe connections, not just the single flat.

There is demolition and building next door. Has that increased the roaches?

Usually yes. Redevelopment work in the Al Zohour extensions disturbs the soil and the old drains, which drives American cockroaches out of their hiding places underground towards the standing buildings. In that case we focus on the entry points: the gully drains, pipe openings and the gaps under external doors.

The whole building shares one drainage system. Is treating my flat enough?

Treating your flat brings the numbers down, but it does not close the source if the shared network stays populated. It is better to treat the flats on the same drain run together, or at the least to seal the pipe openings in your flat so they cannot return through them.

Our home is old and has extensions. Does that make treatment harder?

It does not make it harder, but it changes the map. Homes that have had rooms added over time hold voids and pipe joints that were never sealed tight, so we search those out before spraying, because the nests hide in those concealed joints rather than on the visible surfaces.

We are on the ground floor near the drains. Why more roaches here?

The ground floor is the closest point to the drainage network and the outdoor gully drains, and that is where American cockroaches surface first, especially on humid nights. We treat the low openings and the ground around the gullies and seal under the doors before they reach the kitchen.

We just renovated the kitchen, so why have the roaches come back?

A renovation changes the look, not the source. If the old pipework or the connection to the shared drain is left as it was, the cockroaches come back out behind it into your new kitchen. What matters is sealing the pipe openings and treating the network, not just replacing the cupboards.
