So we read the whole building as a single problem rather than a set of separate flats, and treat the crossing points between them.

Space is tight in Al Thaalibah homes, so the fridge is pushed back until the gap behind it disappears, and that dark, warm corner is where we find nests most often.

Questions about this district

My neighbour treated his flat and the roaches moved to mine. Why?

That is common in Al Thaalibah's touching buildings. When one home is treated, the roaches escape along the shared pipework into the flat next door. The fix is to treat the crossing points between the two units, not your flat on its own, and ideally to coordinate the treatment with your neighbours.

My building is old with shared drainage. Is treating my flat enough?

Treating your flat brings the numbers down inside it, but as long as the drain pipes serve several units the roaches will come back from the shared source. So we treat the gully traps and the pipe entry points across the building as far as we can reach, and advise follow-up that takes in the neighbouring units.

Roaches climb up out of the bathroom drain. How do you stop that?

The American cockroach in this district comes up the sewer line through open or dried-out drains. We treat inside the drain line at the point where they climb, and advise keeping tight covers on the gully traps and pouring water into them regularly so the way in does not stay open.

We store water in tanks and barrels. Does that bring more roaches?

Any open or standing water draws roaches, because they need water more than food. With services cut off and on in Al Thaalibah, open barrels are everywhere, so we cover them and dry the area around them as part of the treatment. Closing off the moisture removes what keeps the population going.

Our district is under the informal-settlement clearance scheme. Do you still treat here?

Yes. As long as the home is lived in, treatment goes ahead. The dense old building and the many cracks make roaches more active here, so we focus on practical measures that suit the district's condition and need no major changes to the structure.
