Questions about this district

The building next door is being demolished. Will its roaches move to us?

Very likely. When an old Petromin block comes down, its cockroaches flee towards the nearest lived-in building looking for water and warmth. We treat the outside entry points, the yard drains and the floor gullies first, closing off the route before they settle into your kitchen.

My flat shares drainage pipes with the neighbours. What does that mean?

It means an infestation can travel from one flat to another without your knowing. In Petromin's wall-to-wall blocks we treat the points where the shared pipes enter and seal around them, and we advise treating the connected units together so the roaches do not simply return from the other side.

I have moved into a re-planned unit. When should it be treated?

Ideally before you bring in the furniture and appliances. An empty unit lets us reach the pipe openings and corners easily, and treating it early stops cockroaches settling in before you fit out the kitchen and turn the water on.

I brought in second-hand furniture and appliances. Do they carry roaches?

They can carry the German cockroach and its egg cases, tucked into drawers and the hinges of appliances. In Petromin an infestation often begins with one used item brought into the kitchen. We check those pieces and treat their cracks and the warm motor housings.

Large roaches come out of the bathroom drain at night. What can be done?

Those are usually American cockroaches climbing up from the old sewer network. On the lower floors of Petromin we treat the gully and the floor opening, and we advise a tight cover and a mesh screen on the drains to stop them rising from the sewer.

My neighbour treated his flat and the roaches came to mine. Why?

Because treating a single flat pushes the cockroaches along the shared pipes into the flat next door rather than killing them off. In wall-to-wall blocks like Petromin's, the answer is to treat the connected units close together, so the roaches are left with nowhere to move to.
