The first reason

Roaches displaced by demolition

Every time an informal building next door is razed, its cockroaches do not vanish; they move to the closest standing wall. The homes left in Ghulail sit under constant re-invasion pressure, so spraying the inside once, without closing the routes they cross from outside, simply invites the next wave in.

The second reason

Old drains opened by the clearance

The drainage under this district is decades old, and demolition has cut it and left it open. Those broken runs are a direct road for the American cockroach, which lives in the sewer and comes up from below. Here the problem enters through the ground and outdoor openings, not through a dirty kitchen.

A district being emptied out

As the redevelopment advances, residents carry their furniture and belongings between homes, and German cockroach egg cases ride along in the cardboard and second-hand appliances. Take in a wardrobe from a departing neighbour and you may take in a whole colony with it, which is why moving households change the job here.

The cleared plots and rubble across Ghulail leave old drain runs cut open and standing water sitting in demolition pits, all of it a few metres from the buildings still lived in, which is ideal breeding ground for the American cockroach.

Appliance heat

The fridge, the water heater and the electrical board draw roaches looking for warmth, especially in the older homes still standing, where the appliances crowd into one narrow kitchen.

The dark, warm gap behind the fridge is the first place we check: it is the German cockroach's safe harbour, close to water and food at once.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, so we start with leaks under the kitchen and bathroom and in the old pipework, before the food sources.

Questions about this district

They demolished the building next door and now there are more roaches. Why?

Because the roaches in the demolished building did not die; the clearance drove them out and they went looking for the nearest occupied wall, which is often yours. We treat the crossing points and put a barrier on the outdoor openings, not only the inside.

We are leaving the district soon. Should we treat before we move?

It is worth it, so you do not carry roaches and their eggs to the new home inside the cardboard and appliances. Treating the furniture before it is packed is far less work than chasing a colony that has moved across the city with you.

We took second-hand furniture from a relative who left Ghulail. Is that a risk?

Yes. A single egg case in a drawer or behind a cabinet is enough to start a colony. We inspect the furniture that came in and treat the cracks and joints before whatever is inside it hatches out into the new place.

Ours is one of the last buildings still standing on the street. Does that make it worse?

Often yes. When the buildings around you are emptied, the fleeing roaches concentrate in the one home still lived in. We focus on the shared walls and the outer boundary, because that is the first line of entry in Ghulail, rather than treating the inside on its own.

The demolition exposed old drain pipes behind our house. What does that mean?

Exposed and broken pipes are a direct source of the large American cockroach that lives in the drains. We seal and treat the low openings and the gullies nearby, so we cut off its route up into the house before it climbs.

There is a plot of rubble and standing water behind us. Does it matter?

Yes. The standing pits and rubble give the roaches water and shelter to breed a few metres from your door. We treat the outer perimeter and the openings that face the cleared ground, not the inside alone, because that is where they are coming from.
