Why they keep coming back in Harat Al Shuruq

The first reason

Old block walls and cracked plaster

The popular houses here are built from concrete block with plaster that has cracked over the years. Those cracks give the American cockroach a warm, dry hide by day, so we treat the voids and joints in the wall itself, not only the visible kitchen surfaces.

Coastal damp that never fully leaves

Because the quarter sits on the Thul shoreline, the drains and yard floor never dry out completely, and that constant moisture hands cockroaches free water. For that reason we start at the wet sources before chasing the ones you happen to see moving.

The third reason

Ground-floor homes with doors onto the street

Most homes in the quarter are single or low storey with doors opening straight onto the street. Cockroaches walk in under the door and through air-conditioner openings, so we seal the outside entry points alongside treating the inside, rather than working on the kitchen alone.

Thul sits on the Red Sea, so the air stays humid and yard drains rarely dry out for long. That standing damp suits the American cockroach, which shelters in soakaways and pipework close to the surface and rises when the ground stays wet.

German cockroach

The German cockroach reaches Harat Al Shuruq inside cartons and second-hand appliances carried into the newer flats, then settles into the warmth of a small kitchen and breeds there.

Appliance heat

Heat from the fridge motor and the water heater in a cramped kitchen makes a warm corner that draws cockroaches, especially on damp winter nights by the coast.

The gap behind the fridge is dark, warm and damp, and in these houses it often backs onto a cracked wall, making it the best place of all for eggs to be laid.

Water before food

Coastal damp already gives a cockroach all the water it needs, so fixing a dripping sink and drying the drain at night cuts off its supply before you ever tackle the food.

What you see at night

The few you see on the wall at night are a fraction of the whole; the rest sit hidden in the block cracks and behind the appliances, waiting for the lights to go out.

Questions about this district

My home is an old popular house. Is the treatment different from a modern flat?

Yes. In an older popular house we concentrate on wall cracks, ageing block and the yard drain where the American cockroach hides. In a modern flat the first concern is usually German cockroach colonies inside the kitchen. We read the building first, then choose the method that fits it.

Cockroaches come up from the yard drain. What can be done?

By the coast the yard drain stays wet and connects to the soakaway, which is the American cockroach's route indoors. We treat the drain itself and place a barrier at the opening, and we advise a metal mesh over the gully that blocks it climbing up while water still drains away.

A neighbour sprayed their house and then ours got worse. Are the two linked?

Often, yes. In the quarter's adjoining houses cockroaches move through the shared wall and the drainage run when only one home is treated. The better answer is to coordinate treatment between the two neighbouring houses, so that whatever flees theirs does not simply migrate into yours.

Does Thul's high humidity make the problem keep coming back?

Humidity alone does not bring cockroaches, but it lets them last longer by supplying water. So we tie the treatment to reducing damp: fixing a small leak, ventilating the kitchen, and drying the drain at night. The follow-up visit checks that moisture has not restarted the problem.

I brought in second-hand furniture. Can cockroaches come with it?

Yes. The German cockroach travels inside drawers, used appliances and moving cartons, and many infestations in the quarter's newer flats began exactly this way. Check the joints and dark corners before you bring a piece in, and tell us so we can focus the treatment on the new item.

My home is on the ground floor with a door to the street. Do they come in underneath?

Yes. In ground-floor homes the American cockroach crawls in from the street and yard under the door and through air-conditioner openings. We seal the bottom door strip and close the gaps around pipes and vents, so less comes in from outside once the inside has been treated.
