The first reason

Homes anchored to a rocky slope

The buildings here are set into the mountain rock, and rain coming off the slope above gathers at the foundations rather than draining away. That trapped moisture in the rubble voids shelters the American cockroach, so we begin at the points where water collects, not inside the kitchen.

Flats let to visitors of the Cave

Near the Cave of Hira many flats change hands between visitors, so German cockroaches arrive with luggage, food bags and furniture that moves in and out. Every new occupant can bring the source back, which is why we close the entry routes and treat neighbouring flats together rather than one on its own.

Souk Al Arab shops below the homes

Many buildings in the district have shops and small eateries serving visitors on the ground floor with homes above them. The food stores and drainage below feed a colony that climbs the shared pipework into the flats, so treating a home on its own never closes the source.

The district is built on rocky ground at the base of the mountain, so rainwater and drainage run downhill and collect in the voids of rubble and foundations. That trapped damp is the humid setting the American cockroach breeds in.

The German cockroach arrives with visitors' luggage, Souk Al Arab crates and furniture on the move, then settles into the warmth of the small kitchens in the slope flats.

The American cockroach comes up out of the rock voids and drains at the base of the mountain, and its numbers rise once rain has run down the slope to the foundations.

Appliance heat

In the cramped kitchens of the slope flats, warmth clings behind the fridge and oven, giving cockroaches a steady heat they breed beside all year round.

The flats packed onto the slope are small, so the gap behind the fridge is narrow, dark and warm, and it is the first place we check because that is where the eggs shelter.

Water before food

A cockroach looks for water before food, and the drainage running down off the mountain along with leaks in old pipework is enough for it, so we dry out the water sources first.

What you see on the wall at night may be climbing up from the shop below you or a drain opening, not living in your kitchen alone.

We work through the kitchen, the bathrooms and the drain runs, and establish the species, the harbourage points and the moisture keeping them there.

Gel bait into joints and cracks, targeted spray where it is warranted, and dust in the dry voids behind appliances.

Does the nearby Souk Al Arab bring cockroaches into the building?

The shops and food stores in the souk are a constant source of both American and German cockroaches, and they travel through drains and cracks into the buildings next to them. We treat the entry points along the shared boundary with the souk, not just inside your home.

I let a flat to Cave of Hira visitors, how do I keep it clear between stays?

Changing occupants means cockroaches keep arriving with luggage and food. We place long-lasting bait in the kitchen and bathroom and seal the pipe gaps, so the flat stays protected from one guest to the next without repeated spraying inside the rooms.

Cockroaches increase after rain runs down the mountain, why?

Water coming off the mountain floods the drainage and rubble voids at the foundations, which pushes the American cockroach up into the lower floors looking for somewhere dry. We treat those voids and drains before it reaches the inside of the flats.

My ground-floor flat backs onto the rock, do they enter through wall cracks?

Yes. Walls in contact with the mountain rock carry fine cracks that the American cockroach climbs straight through from outside into the flat. We seal these openings at ground level and treat the line where the building meets the rock.

There is a small eatery under our building serving visitors, does it matter?

The eatery below is a steady source of food, warmth and drainage, and unless it is treated it keeps feeding a colony that climbs into your flat through the pipework. The result lasts longest when we treat the eatery and the homes above it at the same time.

The flat higher up the slope was treated, did they move to us?

Usually yes. Spraying a single flat on the slope drives the cockroaches down through the shared pipework into the flat next door or below. That is why we treat the connected units along the slope in one go, so the source cannot shift between them.
