The German cockroach is a newcomer here: it hides in the joints of moved furniture and the seams of second-hand appliances, and stays close to the warm, damp kitchen it never really leaves.

The American cockroach is larger and comes from outside the home: from drains, the empty plots nearby and the boundary walls of villa gardens, most of all on humid nights.

Appliance heat

Even new appliances give off enough warmth: behind the fridge, under the oven and washing machine, cockroaches find the heat they need to breed right through the year.

In the district's fitted kitchens the fridge is pushed into a narrow recess, and that dark, warm gap is the first thing we check, because it shelters the first nest.

Water before food

A cockroach can bear hunger but not thirst: a leak under the sink, villa AC condensate and garden irrigation all reach it before food does, so we dry the water sources first.

What you see at night

If you see a single cockroach by day in a newly furnished home, dozens more are usually hiding by night: a daytime sighting signals crowding, not chance.

Questions about this district

My home is new, so where did the roaches come from?

A new building does not keep cockroaches out once they arrive with you. They usually travel in inside a moving box, a used appliance or a parcel, then settle where the kitchen is warm and damp. We look for the point of entry, not the age of the building.

We moved second-hand furniture in, is that the source?

Often it is, in this district. Used furniture and appliances carry German cockroach eggs in their seams and hinges, which then hatch in the new home. We inspect the pieces you moved in first and treat their cracks before we touch the walls.

Do the roaches come from the villa garden?

In the district's villas, yes. The American cockroach lives under irrigation damp and among the stones of boundary walls, then enters through back kitchen doors and drain outlets. We treat the outer perimeter and the garden, not the kitchen alone.

A neighbour in my block treated their flat, will roaches move to me?

They can. In the district's apartment blocks, kitchen pipes link the floors vertically, so when one flat is treated some cockroaches may move through them to the next. That is why we treat the pipe crossings in your flat even when the source sits with someone else.

There is an empty plot and building work beside us, does that matter?

It matters a great deal. The vacant land and building sites next door shelter the American cockroach, and any digging or standing water drives it toward the nearest lived-in house. We seal the external openings and drain covers to hold it at the boundary.

My flat is on an upper floor, is it safe?

Not automatically. The German cockroach climbs between floors through kitchen pipework and service gaps, reaching the upper storeys just as it does the lower ones. We follow the pipe run inside your flat and close its internal openings.
