The famous souq gathers gold merchants, produce traders, fruit vendors and livestock dealers on a single street. Pests arrive with each commodity type from different sources: grain insects with vegetables, storage insects with livestock, and others with imported goods.

The second reason

Nearness to the Islamic Port and Industrial City brings transport and storage pests

Al Kandarah is close to the Islamic Port and Industrial City. Imported and local goods carry storage and transport insects. Pests move from containers and trucks into the shops.

The third reason

Foundations beneath the souq are very old and kept damp by sea seep and old drainage

Souq foundations date back decades and sit close to the sea. Continuous leaks provide permanent dampness beneath the market. This damp environment creates ideal pest shelter zones.

Before treatment

The site decides the shape of the programme

Al Kandarah sits very close to the Islamic Port, the Industrial City and the sea. Humidity remains high all year and old buildings are riddled with cracks and gaps. The famous Kandarah Souq draws goods from across the Gulf region.

The foot of the wall

Boundaries between villas and the souq may be very weak because the market has expanded over time and original walls have broken down. Gaps between properties are large.

Frond and block piles

Piles of rejected vegetables and fruit behind the souq shelter pest populations in vast numbers. These accumulations are not regularly cleared.

Standing water

Standing water collects around the souq from produce washing and old drainage. Mosquitoes breed in enormous numbers in these damp pockets.

The feed store

Souq storerooms provide year round shelter and feeding. Stored grains, produce and cured goods provide complete food supply for insects.

We walk the boundary, the feed store, the pens, the water sources and the buildings, record the species present, the burrows, the entry points and every standing water source, and number the monitoring positions on a plan.

Lift what things hide under

The piles, the rubble, the fallen dates, the feed sacks pushed up against the wall. On any large plot these gather simply because there is room for them, and clearing them brings the numbers down before a single product is used.

The perimeter band and targeted treatment

A band at the foot of the wall and the buildings, treatment into the burrows and cracks, locked rodent stations fixed along the route, and mosquito breeding sites treated in the water itself.

Scheduled visits and a sheet each time

We come back on an agreed schedule, read the same points, renew the band the sun and the irrigation have used up, and write down what was found, what was applied and where, and what the site needs closed.

Water sources treated at the source

Drinking troughs, drip lines, tank outlets and anything that stands for days, because mosquitoes come out of water and not out of the air.

The foot of the wall, the building bases and the path edges, which is the line anything coming off the open ground has to cross.
Locked rodent stations

Fixed and numbered along one route, and closed so that neither a child's hand nor an animal on the site can get into them.
What the site does afterwards

What to cover, where to move animal water bowls, when irrigation can start again without washing the band off, and the ventilation time, which we give you on the call because it changes with the product and the space.

A schedule agreed ahead of the seasons, the same points read every time, and a record of what was found, what was treated and what is still open.

What is different about Al Balad Sub-Municipality

Al Balad sub municipality covers the historic core of Jeddah and the districts that first grew outside its wall. Its building stock is the oldest in the city: heritage stone houses and apartment blocks from past decades, threaded with hotels, shops and crowded popular markets around Bab Makkah, Bab Sharif and the Kandarah Souq. Nearness to the sea, the Islamic Port and the Arbaeen lagoon keeps humidity high all year, water and drainage networks are old, and narrow lanes, dense eateries and commercial storerooms put food and shelter within reach at every corner.

Questions about this district

The souq beside us brings enormous pest numbers. Can we prevent them?

Preventing all souq pests is impossible. But we can treat boundaries between villa and souq and treat interiors with higher frequency.

Wedding season brings more pests to the villa. Why?

Kandarah Souq buys in vast quantities of gold and jewellery during wedding season. This brings traders, buyers and goods, and pests come with them.

The port is close and sends us many shipments. Do all goods carry insects?

Most imported goods carry hidden insects and eggs. Produce, fruits, grains and fabrics may all arrive with concealed infestations.

Is treating the villa interior enough or must the souq also be treated?

Treating villa interiors is important, but the souq itself needs separate treatment if the owner agrees. Without it pests continuously return.

Our villa is beside a vegetable shop. Is this a continuous pest source?

Yes. Vegetable and fruit shops attract specialist insects. This means a stronger programme for the adjacent villa.

Are souq pests different species from insects in other districts?

Yes. Specialist insects target grain, produce, honey and dried goods. These require different treatment methods.
