Vacant land between villas is piled with sand, cement, bricks and steel, offering damp shelter for insects, scorpions and geckos. The wide open ground between them gives geckos unlimited movement.

Wadi Uranah and standing water after rain

Tributaries of Wadi Uranah cross the scheme and pool in depressions after rain, gathering insects, mosquitoes, mites and scorpions. Geckos move down from the villas towards the water and settle in the surrounding zone.

How we work

Inspect at night and find the source

We come at the hour it is actually moving, and establish which wall face it is living on, which lights are gathering its food, the entry points and the crevices it wedges into by day.

Treat the food source

We treat the flying and crawling insects on the wall faces, around the perimeter and around the lighting. Once the food goes, the wall stops being worth staying on.

Close the openings and clear the crevices

We seal the air-conditioner sleeve, screen the vents and drain outlets, deal with the underside of doors, and place a repellent in the crevices and behind panels so they move out before anything is closed.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the glued eggs have hatched, check the seals held, and re-treat any wall face where activity has returned.

What is different about South Makkah Sub-Municipality

South Makkah sub municipality is the belt of Crown Prince schemes south of Al Ukayshiyah, along the Al Laith road and the extension of Ibrahim Al Khalil Road to the Fifth Ring Road and the Non Muslims bypass. Most of it is still bare: granted plots awaiting houses, new villas standing alone, open building sites and unfinished paving and drainage. Wadi Uranah and its tributaries cross the low ground and hold water after rain, hills close it in, and rodents, reptiles and scorpions shelter in stacked materials and foundation pits before the neighbourhoods fill up.

Questions about this district

The new villa is not finished yet. When should we start treatment?

Before the foundation pits are covered and the ground floor is poured, because geckos will hide in the foundation pits if untreated, and once they are sealed you cannot reach them.

Will treating one villa be enough or do we need to treat the whole neighbourhood?

One villa may be enough if you seal the windows and openings after treatment, but if the villas around yours are still under construction the geckos will return from them within weeks.

Are there geckos in the landscaping and irrigation?

Yes, if the garden is watered, the moisture attracts worms, insects and mites, and geckos will come down through gaps in the walls to hunt in the garden at night.

Do deep foundations under the villa let geckos in from below?

Yes, if the gaps around the foundations and underground pipes are not sealed before the floor is poured, geckos will enter from beneath and climb the interior walls.

After winter rains does the gecko population spike?

Very much so. Rain fills the wadi tributaries with water and insects, and geckos arrive in large numbers from the surrounding hills seeking water and food.

Should we spray the empty villa next to the landscaped garden?

Yes, especially the gaps around windows, air vents and water tanks, because the garden and water attract insects and geckos will come from the garden.
