Inspect at night and find the source

We come at the hour it is actually moving, and establish which wall face it is living on, which lights are gathering its food, the entry points and the crevices it wedges into by day.

Treat the food source

We treat the flying and crawling insects on the wall faces, around the perimeter and around the lighting. Once the food goes, the wall stops being worth staying on.

Close the openings and clear the crevices

We seal the air-conditioner sleeve, screen the vents and drain outlets, deal with the underside of doors, and place a repellent in the crevices and behind panels so they move out before anything is closed.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the glued eggs have hatched, check the seals held, and re-treat any wall face where activity has returned.

Large tracts were cleared for the northern expansion and the Rua Al Haram scheme, leaving excavated ground and open construction sites beside ageing blocks that now serve as dense seasonal lodgings in Jarwal and Al Taysir. Old flood paths still fall from Jabal Qaiqaan and Jabal Khandamah towards the mosque, and markets and eateries crowd Al Masjid Al Haram Road and Umm Al Qura Road.

Questions about this district

Is the gecko coming from Jabal Khandamah or from the neighbouring buildings?

Both, but the mountain is the source. Insects drift downhill at night and geckos follow them. Neighbouring buildings provide shelter but the hill provides the food.

Does treating one house in the ravines protect it from geckos coming from the mountain?

Only partial protection, because fresh geckos arrive from the mountain nightly. Treatment requires regular returns, not a single application.

After rain when do geckos arrive in greatest numbers in the ravines?

Immediately after rain, because insects emerge from wet soil and geckos follow. Rain on the mountain means rain in the ravines and insects increase sharply.

Do the excavated ground sites around the northern expansion attract more geckos?

Yes, open excavation and construction sites provide fertile habitat for insects. Geckos arrive from these sites into the neighbouring old houses.

If the old stones are cemented together does the gecko still enter between them?

Yes, and cracks between stones may be extremely deep and may run as natural lines from the mountain downwards. Geckos move along natural crack lines.

Will cleaning up the vacant ground around the expansion drive the geckos away?

The vacant ground is relatively distant. The main problem is Jabal Khandamah itself. Cleaning helps but will not solve it while the mountain towers above.
