Rest houses with weak foundations on bare earth and wide gaps under the floor structure provide natural scorpion habitat. The gaps between rest houses and new villas create safe corridors the scorpion travels at night without obstruction or alarm.

The second reason

Empty land between government villas harbours scorpions

Rawdat Al Taawun has large vacant spaces between plots, and these empty areas provide natural scorpion refuge. Small insects and other pests in the empty land supply food the scorpion hunts, drawing it toward the villas adjoining the open ground.

The third reason

Proximity to Al Khumrah brings scorpions from the east

The industrial and agricultural Al Khumrah on the district's western boundary supplies both shelter and food for scorpions. Scorpions travel from Al Khumrah across vacant land and into the first villas and rest houses nearest to the industrial zone.

Night survey and perimeter inspection

We walk the perimeter after dark with an ultraviolet lamp, which makes a scorpion show up against wall and soil, and we record the harbourage, the ways in and how much prey is present.

Treat the harbourage and the building edge

Dust into the wall joints and the dry voids, and a targeted band tight against the foundation and around openings, because the material holds longer on a porous surface than on tile.

Close the ways in and remove the prey

A sweep under the doors, sealing where air-conditioning and drain pipes pass through, mesh over openings, and treatment of the cockroaches and insects it feeds on, so the reason to come in goes with them.

The follow-up visit

A scorpion can sit in its harbourage for weeks without moving, so the first pass does not always reach it. We come back to refresh the perimeter band and check what has appeared since.

What is different about South Sub-Municipality

The South sub municipality runs from the edge of Old Makkah Road down to Al Khumrah and the southern corniche. Dense residential districts sit beside new subdivisions such as Al Sanabil and Al Taawun, warehouse fringes such as Al Saruriyah and Al Sarawat, and an old seaside settlement at Al Quzayn. Open stormwater channels cross the housing, and the warehouses, the vegetable and livestock markets and the nearby Islamic Port and Industrial City give pests shelter, food and year round humidity. Pressure is greatest in the older quarters, where drainage networks are ageing.

Why are rural rest houses far more at risk from scorpions than new villas?

Rest houses with weak foundations on bare earth offer easy scorpion entry. New villas with concrete foundations are in better condition, but a rest house next to a new villa attracts scorpions to the weak structure first.

Is treating just the new government villa enough in Al Taawun?

Treating only the villa is not enough if it sits next to a rest house or vacant land. The surrounding land and neighbouring rest houses must be treated together or scorpions migrate between them.

Are the vacant plots between villas the main scorpion source here?

Vacant land offers temporary shelter and insect food but scorpions originate mainly from Al Khumrah and the rest houses. Treatment begins at the boundaries, not in the empty middle ground.

How often must a rural rest house be treated each year?

A rest house next to new villas needs treatment at least twice yearly. Isolated rest houses may need only one annual treatment unless nearby construction brings scorpions closer.

Is sealing door and window gaps enough in the rest house?

Sealing gaps is important but weak foundations offer entry from beneath the floor. External treatment of the rest house perimeter and soil around the base is far more critical to control.

Will treating Al Khumrah reduce the scorpion problem in Al Taawun?

Treating Al Khumrah is not your responsibility but recognising it as a main source helps focus your own work. Regular treatment on the district boundaries facing Al Khumrah stops incoming waves.
