Piles of blocks, sand and steel rebar scattered across the new district provide shelter and food for rats during months of construction. The snake follows behind, hunting the prey, and the open ground between houses gives it safe routes in and out to move freely between the rubble piles.

Wadis and low points hold water after rain, and the moisture draws worms and insects that in turn draw rodents and snakes. New homes close to the wadi channel are at higher risk because the ground around them has not yet dried out from foundation work and earth moving.

Inspect and locate

We work the perimeter, the garden and the service rooms with a torch and a mirror, reading the tracks, the skins and the burrows to establish whether it is still on site and where it came in.

Safe removal

It comes out on a hook and tongs into a closed container and is released away from buildings where that is possible, with no chasing it around a room.

Close the routes, take away the shelter

A strip under the gate, sleeves around pipe entries, tight covers on the floor drains, and the blocks and palm fronds moved off the wall line.

Cut the food, then come back

We treat the rodents and the geckos on the perimeter, then return once that activity has settled to check the sealed points and look for any fresh track.

What is different about South Makkah Sub-Municipality

South Makkah sub municipality is the belt of Crown Prince schemes south of Al Ukayshiyah, along the Al Laith road and the extension of Ibrahim Al Khalil Road to the Fifth Ring Road and the Non Muslims bypass. Most of it is still bare: granted plots awaiting houses, new villas standing alone, open building sites and unfinished paving and drainage. Wadi Uranah and its tributaries cross the low ground and hold water after rain, hills close it in, and rodents, reptiles and scorpions shelter in stacked materials and foundation pits before the neighbourhoods fill up.

Questions about this district

Does leaving vacant land next to the house increase snake risk?

Yes, vacant land provides shelter and safe routes for snakes and rats. In Al Judairiyah Al Jadid in particular, the unbuilt plots between new villas are under continuous development, so they become hidden and ideal for snakes to hide in and move through.

Is the gap under a new villa gate a real problem?

The gap under the gate on new homes is often larger than it should be because finishing work has not started. A slim snake enters easily through a gap the width of a finger, so do not wait until the house is complete to seal these gaps around the gate frame and threshold.

Does ongoing construction around the house mean snakes will definitely come?

No, but it increases the likelihood. Building opens new entry routes and disturbs rat populations. Protection comes from closing the house routes and sealing gaps around pipes and cables before the neighbouring site finishes work.

How often should I inspect the new house to check for snakes?

Inspecting does not stop entry, but sealing does. Inspect interior and exterior corners and gaps under furniture during building and after, then focus on sealing every route you find before the next stage of work begins.

Are homes on the edge of the district near Wadi Uranah more exposed?

Proximity to the wadi means more moisture and more rats, but snakes follow food, not water directly. The risk comes from rodent activity, not the wadi itself, so controlling rats around the perimeter is the real defense.

Does closing a new furnished house for weeks reduce snake entry risk?

Closing alone does not stop snakes if entry routes remain open. Gaps in unfinished foundations, around doors and windows are the problem, and sealing them matters more than simply shutting the house up.
