The first reason

Stone foundations placed directly on soil are an open highway for termites

The stone in old foundations has cracks and gaps between the blocks, and the constantly damp soil penetrates them. The colony uses these voids as a direct route into the house, reaching the damp timber easily and without delay.

The second reason

Narrow alleys trap moisture tight against the walls

Air cannot move through these tight lanes, so water stays there, enclosed. Walls absorb moisture from both sides, and the footing beneath draws water up from below. This permanent moisture trap means the colony does not need to search for water from a distance.

The third reason

Rocky slopes above drain storm water down into the lanes

Water from Jabal Al Sharashif and Jabal Omar pours downslope when the rains come, gathering in the narrow alleys. This seasonal surge raises the moisture around old footings and makes them an ideal environment for colonies to spread and multiply.

The evidence that decides the treatment

One of Makkah's oldest quarters with stone foundations placed directly on soil, lanes so narrow that air does not circulate, and walls so close they share moisture and footings with their neighbours.

Mud tubes

Mud tubes show on the stone walls and at the gaps between stone blocks, often hidden under old paint or layers of accumulated moisture and dust.

Shed wings are rare in these dim narrow lanes, but we may find them at house doorways and the few ventilation openings that exist.

The water source

The main water source is seepage through the old stone foundation as it continuously absorbs moisture from the soil, plus storm water that collects in the confined lanes.

Joints and pipe entries are simple in these old buildings because they predate modern plumbing, but the gaps between the stones and the floor become highways for termites to climb.

Inspect and trace

We sound the timber and the skirting, take moisture readings, and follow the tubes to the point where they leave the soil. We also settle the species, because one that lives inside dry wood is not treated like one that lives in the ground.

Treat the soil around the building

A narrow trench at the footing and injection at regular spacing, so the treated band runs continuous with no gap to walk around.

Drill the joints, inject the timber

Small holes at spacing along the slab joints, the wall bases and the pipe entries, direct injection into the galleries inside the affected timber, then the holes are closed and made good.

Bait stations and monitoring

Stations in the soil carrying a slow-acting material the workers pass through the colony by mouth-to-mouth feeding, and we come back to read them, because an empty tube on a wall proves nothing on its own.

Questions about this district

Does constant moisture in the lane mean the colony will definitely return?

Constant moisture means the risk is always present, but sustained monitoring and proper treatment will prevent the colony from rebuilding. What matters is watching for early signs and acting before it gathers strength again.

Can stone foundations be dried out where moisture rises from the ground?

Natural stone draws water from the ground by its nature, and stopping this completely is not possible. But treating the known termite pathways and applying a water barrier around the perimeter of the footing cuts the risk significantly.

If I treat only my house, does it protect my neighbours from infestation?

No. The colony in the soil serves the whole quarter. Treating your house stops it from entering yours, but your neighbour faces the same threat from the same colony. We often recommend coordination among neighbours.

Should the old stone attached to the walls be replaced?

There is no need. The stone itself is not the problem; moisture and the pathways from soil are. We focus on stopping water entry and watching for any termite activity on the surface and around the base.

Do winter temperatures in the tight lanes kill the termites?

Colonies reduce their activity in cold weather but do not die. The old houses stay relatively warm inside, and the colonies remain active in the footings and in the passages beneath the floor.

How many times each year do we need to return for inspection and monitoring?

In a quarter this old and damp, we recommend at least three monitoring visits per year: spring, summer and autumn. Winter activity is lower but we do not ignore it.
