Why they keep coming back in Al Shubaikah

In Al Shubaikah's alleys we find roaches emerging from the shared floor drains on the ground storeys far more often than from inside the kitchens themselves, which points to the pipework rather than the counter. The method is set out in full on our Cockroach control service.

The first reason

Shared walls, shared drains

The party walls between Al Shubaikah's old houses and the drains that connect them let a cockroach move from one flat to another. We close the crossing points at gullies and at the joints between units, rather than sealing a single flat and leaving the route beside it open.

The second reason

Homes a short walk from the Haram

Being this close to the Haram means many homes take in guests and cook for them right through the pilgrimage seasons. The steady turnover and constant cooking give the German cockroach a food supply that never lapses, so we concentrate on the kitchen that is never off duty.

The third reason

Narrow alleys on disturbed ground

The narrow alleys keep the buildings pressed together beside the Jabal Omar works. As the ground is dug and disturbed, cockroaches are driven out of the soil and sewers towards the nearest old building, so we treat the ground level entry points before they reach the inside.

The vast Jabal Omar development runs right up against Al Shubaikah's old houses. Digging and shifting the ground drives American cockroaches out of the old sewers and up into the nearest adjoining buildings, which here are the oldest in the quarter.

German cockroach

It thrives in Al Shubaikah's crowded kitchens, where cooking for guests goes on for much of the day, and it hides in the cracks of the old wooden cupboards beside the stove.

It climbs up from the old sewers and the ground floor gullies of the aged houses, and it shows up more once the neighbouring Jabal Omar digging is under way.

Appliance heat

In these small, packed kitchens the fridge sits hard against the cooker, making one continuous band of warmth that draws roaches into the motor housing through the night.

In Al Shubaikah's tight flats the fridge is pushed back against the mud wall, and the gap behind it becomes a dark, warm run that never gets cleaned.

Water before food

The damp in the leaking pipes of these old houses is enough for a cockroach on its own, so it stays near the kitchen and bathroom plumbing even when food is stored well.

We work through the kitchen, the bathrooms and the drain runs, and establish the species, the harbourage points and the moisture keeping them there.

Gel bait into joints and cracks, targeted spray where it is warranted, and dust in the dry voids behind appliances.

We point out the gaps, the drain entries and anything needing a plumber, because exclusion does more to stop a return than repeating the spray.

Questions about this district

My neighbour in the same building treated his flat. Will they move to me?

Quite possibly. In Al Shubaikah's adjoining buildings, roaches often flee a treated flat into the one next door through the shared pipes. It works better to treat the connected units together, or to close the crossing points between them at around the same time.

My house is old and the walls are cracked. Does that matter?

It does. The cracks in the mud walls and old timber of Al Shubaikah's houses give cockroaches shelter that surface spraying cannot reach. We work inside those voids with bait rather than spraying the surface, which the roach simply walks around.

We host guests in season. How do we protect the kitchen?

Cooking for guests near the Haram keeps a cockroach's food within reach. We focus on clearing crumbs at night and sealing how food is stored, and we place bait along the routes the roaches travel rather than on open surfaces where it does little.

Does the Jabal Omar work next door affect my home?

It can. Digging and shifting the ground near Al Shubaikah pushes American cockroaches out of the sewers towards the closest buildings. We check the ground level entry points and drain openings and close them, so less comes across into the house.

The roaches come up out of the floor drain. What can be done?

The ground floor gullies in Al Shubaikah's old houses connect to sewers the American cockroach climbs. We treat inside the drain line and fit or repair the covers and traps so it cannot make its way up at night.

There is a small eatery below serving pilgrims. Is that the source?

It may well be. Small eateries near the Haram produce food waste that draws cockroaches, and they can climb from the eatery into the flats above through pipes and cracks. Treating the whole building works better than treating your flat alone.
