The shops receive boxes and sacks from different suppliers, and each delivery may carry ants. Ants settle in the shop then climb to the flats above. Treating the shop without treating the upper flats leaves ants falling down constantly from above.

The second reason

Shared walls are bridges between shop and homes

The walls that separate the shop from the flats above are old and full of gaps. Ants move easily through openings, cracks and electrical conduits. Treating one side without the other does not stop movement through the separating wall.

Old moisture collects ants and residents both

The quarter is old with high humidity from narrow streets, closely packed buildings and nearness to the coast. Damp foundations and floors provide ideal ant habitat and the moisture draws them constantly.

Ant trails originate from the shop below and climb walls, gaps and pipes to reach the upper flats, following moisture and food scent.

Moisture before food

Humidity in the old quarter and proximity to the coast and narrow streets cause water to collect in foundations and floors, drawing ants constantly.

The nest is usually in old walls, under floor voids, and in the shared walls between the shop and the flat above it.

We follow the line from where you see it to where it enters, and establish the species, what it is feeding on and the moisture keeping the nest close.

We choose the matrix from the feeding preference and place it on the trail itself, leaving the trail intact so the workers carry it to the queen and the brood.

Treat the perimeter and close the ways in

An external treatment at the wall base and the openings, and we point out the cracks, pipe entries and any branch touching the building.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the bait has worked through the nest, check the trail is gone, and look for a satellite nest if a new line has appeared.

Sugar or protein according to what the workers are carrying, placed on the trail rather than near it.
An external perimeter treatment

A band at the wall base and the outside openings, with the indoor trail left unsprayed so it keeps carrying bait.
Moisture points and entries

Condensate lines, sink surrounds, weep holes and pipe entries, which are what keeps a nest against the building.

Questions about this district

I own the shop and the flat above. Should I treat them together or separately?

Separate treatment will fail because ants move between the shop and flat through walls and openings. We treat the shop and flat as one, including the shared walls, the foundations and the ceilings between them.

New deliveries bring ants into my shop. How can I prevent this?

You cannot prevent ants entirely in incoming stock. Regular treatment of the shop and upper flat, combined with quick inspection of boxes, significantly reduces the problem.

Do you treat food shops and cafés in the quarter?

Yes, we treat all commercial premises in the quarter including cafés and small food shops. Treatment is safe for stock if items are removed or covered properly during application.

Is the flat directly above the shop more at risk of ants than other flats?

Much more. A flat directly above a shop receives ants constantly from below, especially if the shop stores food or raw materials.

Must the whole quarter be treated or is treating my shop and flat enough?

Treating your shop, flat, shared walls and the neighbours immediately adjacent significantly reduces pressure. Full quarter treatment is most thorough but may not be necessary if your space is well sealed.

The flat above my shop stands empty. Will ants move in?

Yes, the empty flat becomes an ant stronghold. Ants climb from the shop and settle in the furniture, gaps and walls. Treating an empty flat is easier before new residents move in.
