Why they keep coming back in Al Muntazah

The first reason

Workers rotate through the same flat

When one group of workers leaves and another moves into the same flat, the bedding and furniture usually stay behind rather than being cleared out, so the unit carries its previous occupants' history before an inspection ever starts.

Shops trade below, staff sometimes sleep behind them

Many buildings here run a shop off the ground floor, and it is not unusual for one of the staff to sleep in a back room among the stock, which puts a shop's activity in direct contact with the flats stacked above it.

The internal street grid here dates from an older layout, so building entrances sit close together and sometimes serve more than one block, which makes moving furniture and running inspections between units quicker than in a district where buildings stand further apart.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

Workers in our flat share the same bed across different shifts, does that speed up the spread?

Yes. Constant handover of the same bed between different workers spreads feeding marks over a wider stretch of the seam rather than one spot, so we check the mattress from several sides rather than treating it as a single occupant's bed.

The grocer downstairs sleeps in a back room among the boxes, does that threaten us?

If his room shares a wall with the stairwell or the entrance, we widen the inspection to those shared walls before reaching your flat, because the distance between where he sleeps and the building stairs is very short in most blocks here.

One maintenance worker services the shared water tank across several nearby buildings each week, is that a risk?

Bed bugs do not travel through water or plumbing, so the risk from this worker is limited to whatever he carries on his clothes or tools if he enters an infested flat, and that is unlikely enough that it does not change our inspection plan.

Our ground floor flat near Wadi Al Asla has a damp east wall, does that delay finding bed bugs?

Damp does not keep bed bugs away, it tends to push them away from the wall toward the mattress seam and the drier corners of the frame instead, so on ground floor flats near the wadi we concentrate the inspection there rather than on the wall itself.

Our sponsor brings a new group of workers with their own bedding every few months, should each group be checked?

Yes. Each group arrives with its own furniture and bags, and that resets the risk regardless of what the last inspection found, so it is better to check the rooms before a new group settles in than to wait until a problem shows.

The old wooden wardrobes have been fixed to the wall since the building went up, do they need special checking?

Old cracks in the wood and the direct join between the wardrobe and the wall make that corner a favoured hiding place, so we check the wardrobe's joints and the seam where it meets the wall just as closely as we check the bed.
