Sitting at the western edge of Al Utaybiyah next to Al Zahra and Ar Rusayfah, An Nuzhah grew outward in stages, so an older block from the district's early years can stand beside a recently finished one on the very same street, each with its own frame joints and seams to work through.

The third reason

Through roads that link the district outward

Umm Al Qura Road and the Third Ring Road run through An Nuzhah, and Al Hijaz Mall draws shoppers in from bordering districts, so furniture and visitors moving along those routes reach homes here more often than in a district set back off the main roads.

An Nuzhah sits at the western edge of Al Utaybiyah, bordering Al Zahra and Ar Rusayfah along the old Makkah road, so its building stock spans several decades of expansion rather than one uniform phase.

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

What is different about Al Utaybiyah Sub-Municipality

Al Utaybiyah sub municipality covers the old districts north of the Grand Mosque: the hillside quarters of Al Hajun, Al Utaybiyah and Al Bayban, Al Zahir and Al Shuhada at the northern entrance, and the newer Al Zahra, Al Diyafah and An Nuzhah westward. Its building stock is among the oldest in Makkah, stone houses on the hills, packed apartment blocks and sewers decades old, threaded with crowded markets like the Utaybiyah souq and furnished flats that fill in the pilgrim seasons. Wadi Al Zahir and Wadi Al Tanim carry storm water through it, and industrial workshops line Hajj Street.

Questions about this district

Our flat sits above the social insurance office, does its footfall raise the risk?

A busy morning downstairs does not carry bed bugs through the air, the real risk is whatever actually gets carried up into the flat, a bag or a piece of furniture coming from an infested place, so we focus the check on anything recently brought in rather than the footfall at the entrance itself.

Our children carry blankets to An Nuzhah Park most evenings, do they need checking?

Yes, anything that leaves the house, gets spread on the ground somewhere public and comes straight back onto the bed is worth a quick look, bed bugs travel by contact rather than distance, and checking the edges and folds before it goes back on the mattress is usually enough.

Our building is old but the neighbours built recently, does the check differ?

Yes, in terms of where we look, an older building carries wooden joints and plaster cracks built up over decades, while a newer one has none of that and the hiding places are mostly in the mattress and a recently imported frame, so the focus shifts even though the method stays the same.

Delivery trucks unload neighbours' orders on Umm Al Qura Road, does that matter to us?

The risk is not the truck itself but whatever piece actually enters your building, if the delivery is for your neighbours only it has nothing to do with your home, but if you borrow something from it or store it briefly near your entrance, that piece is worth checking before it reaches a bedroom.

We borrow spare prayer rugs from Al Hawas Mosque, do they need checking?

A mosque rug is laid on the floor in a place many people pass through, so it is worth unrolling and checking the folds before it goes into a guest room, especially if it then sits folded next to bedding without being aired out for a long stretch.

A shop nearby turned into a water company office, should we recheck?

A change of business downstairs does not change your flat on its own, but if the changeover involved moving old furniture through or storing it briefly in the shared entrance while the space was fitted out, that is what calls for a check, not the change of use itself.
