Inspect and map the water

We walk the perimeter, the roof, the garden, the meter chambers and the condensate runs, record everything that holds water, and read the species from the breeding site and the time of biting.

Remove the water that can go

Empty, invert, cover: saucers, containers, old tyres and roof gullies. Every point that disappears is a treatment that never needs repeating.

Larval treatment, then the resting surfaces

Water that cannot be drained is treated so the larva never completes, then a residual goes under planting, beneath outdoor furniture and along low shaded walls.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the generation that was in the water on the first visit has completed, review every point we recorded and re-treat where needed.

Al Utaybiyah sub municipality covers the old districts north of the Grand Mosque: the hillside quarters of Al Hajun, Al Utaybiyah and Al Bayban, Al Zahir and Al Shuhada at the northern entrance, and the newer Al Zahra, Al Diyafah and An Nuzhah westward. Its building stock is among the oldest in Makkah, stone houses on the hills, packed apartment blocks and sewers decades old, threaded with crowded markets like the Utaybiyah souq and furnished flats that fill in the pilgrim seasons. Wadi Al Zahir and Wadi Al Tanim carry storm water through it, and industrial workshops line Hajj Street.

Our furnished flat takes new guests every week. Do mosquitoes arrive with them?

Mosquitoes can arrive with guests or persist from the previous occupants. Treatment before each new group reduces the problem if bathrooms and damp voids are cleaned first.

The shared bathroom serves several flats and stays damp with standing water. Is that a source?

Yes, shared bathrooms with high humidity and water pooling round pipes are perfect breeding sites. We treat gaps round pipes, traps and damp corners where eggs hide.

During Hajj the flat fills with guests and the bathroom runs all day. Does treatment work?

Pre-season treatment is essential. During the season we focus on water sources in bathrooms, kitchens and round pipes. The whole district shares the problem so one flat alone cannot succeed.

The commercial shop below our flat uses water constantly. Does it reach us?

Water from shops can pool in the voids between storeys or seep through the floor. We treat the gaps and shared pipes running between shop and flat.

Is treating a block of adjacent flats better than one flat alone?

Much better. Mosquitoes move freely between adjacent flats through shared gaps and pipes. Block treatment is far more effective.

Do the nearby wadis bring mosquitoes to the district right after rain?

Yes, floods leave water and silt in every depression round homes. This water persists two weeks or more before drying, and is a prime breeding source.
