Why they keep coming back in Al Safrah

Birds here come not from neighbourhoods but from the open hillsides and land around the campus, and may not nest on the house at all but come only to drink and hunt food in the open courtyard. The method is set out in full on what Bird and pigeon control involves.

The first reason

Scattered homes with wide open land between them

Each home is surrounded by wide open ground, and wild pigeons come from that land and the hills. The bird does not necessarily nest on the house but may come only to drink and find food in the open courtyard.

The second reason

University campus and nearby farming land

The Umm Al Qura campus at Al Abidiyah is very close to Al Safrah with green spaces and open ground that provide food and water for birds. The pigeon may nest on the campus and the village at the same time.

Hills and sandy ground surrounding the area

The Taif and Al Hada roads are very near and the hills around Al Safrah provide natural shelter for wild birds. Treating one house will not stop the bird coming from an endless natural source.

How we work

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

Every ledge, condenser platform and shaft, photographed, with nesting separated from perching before anything is chosen.
Nest removal and drain clearing

Lifted wet rather than swept dry, bagged closed, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The nest position treated for ticks and mites, then the surface the droppings sat on sanitised.
Sealing and fitting the deterrents

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire, spikes or wire on narrow projections, and metal mesh across ventilation openings.

Netting slackens and corners open over time; the visit corrects that and closes any new position.

What is different about Al Aziziyah (Makkah) Sub-Municipality

Al Aziziyah sub municipality runs from the Bin Dawood markets to the Al Hada road and carries pilgrim traffic to Mina. Hotel towers and furnished apartment blocks fill and empty with the Hajj and Ramadan seasons, and the kitchens, restaurants and markets along Al Masjid Al Haram Road and King Abdulaziz Road leave food waste at every peak. Southwards the fabric loosens into villas and planned streets in An Naseem and Al Awali, then Al Abidiyah's campus and the old farms of Al Husayniyah, where Wadi Uranah holds water after rain and farm enclosures shelter rodents and reptiles.

Questions about this district

Pigeons come to my house to drink from the courtyard then fly to the hills. Do we treat the courtyard or the roof?

We treat the roof, ledges and around the courtyard too. Water in the courtyard attracts the bird strongly, so we fit deterrents around water points and treat the roof.

Umm Al Qura University is close by but very far away too. Is treating my house alone enough?

Treating the house reduces the bird landing on it but does not stop it completely while its source is the campus. We focus on reducing the attractions around the house: water and food.

Are wild birds from the hills different from domestic pigeons?

Yes, their behaviour is completely different. Wild birds do not necessarily sleep on the house and do not depend on it. We focus on preventing roof access instead of removing nests.

The land around my house is mine. Do we treat the land or just the house?

We treat the house, ledges and roof. We do not treat the land because birds may come from further away. Focusing on the house reduces visits.

In winter and summer the number of birds on the house varies. Does treatment help in all seasons?

Yes. Treatment is seasonal and varies with attraction. In dry seasons birds come for water more, so we focus on covering water points.

Wild birds may come and the house is surrounded by deterrents. Will they persist or go elsewhere?

The wild bird will look for alternatives because food and water sources are very wide. Deterrents make it choose another place easily.
