Shops below the apartment buildings attract pigeons from a distance with bread and food aromas. Pigeons nest on the apartment roof directly above, and droppings fall onto shop windows and frontages. We seal the roof from below with strong mesh and fit protective screens to shop facades as well.

Close packed villas and connected roofscapes

Small villas stand so tightly packed that pigeons walk across roofs from villa to villa without difficulty. We fit a deterrent on each roof ledge suited to its height and material, and seal the gaps between villas with mesh or metal brackets to stop cross movement.

Pressure from the stadium and hospital nearby

The stadium and hospital are strong food sources for pigeons, and the district sits between them. We focus on sealing every opening in the neighbourhood before pigeons establish it as a regular site, because the surrounding pressure is very high.

Entry points are numerous: ventilation shafts, bathroom exhaust pipes, roof doors, gaps between villas and spaces between storeys in the blocks. Each needs separate treatment.

Water tanks sit on roofs or on side walls, so we fit a metal shroud around each or seal it with tight mesh that passes water but not birds.

How we work

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

What is different about South Sub-Municipality

The South sub municipality runs from the edge of Old Makkah Road down to Al Khumrah and the southern corniche. Dense residential districts sit beside new subdivisions such as Al Sanabil and Al Taawun, warehouse fringes such as Al Saruriyah and Al Sarawat, and an old seaside settlement at Al Quzayn. Open stormwater channels cross the housing, and the warehouses, the vegetable and livestock markets and the nearby Islamic Port and Industrial City give pests shelter, food and year round humidity. Pressure is greatest in the older quarters, where drainage networks are ageing.

Questions about this district

Does fitting mesh on a shop front block the view inside?

Fine mesh allows clear sight lines inward and outward. We choose mesh size by shop type and light requirements, and silver mesh is barely visible from the street at any distance.

Will new pigeons come back to an adjacent villa after a year?

If we seal all villas and blocks around the neighbourhood they will not settle. A passing bird may investigate once but will find no shelter and move on. The key is ensuring every opening stays sealed.

On a small villa, where exactly do we fit the deterrent?

On the front and rear roof ledges, on all vents and shafts, and around air conditioning units. We cover every possible entry point the pigeons could use.

Does fitting mesh on a flat affect natural light in the apartment?

Fine mesh passes most light and has minimal effect. On south facing flats we use finer mesh, on north facing ones we may use sturdier mesh that still passes adequate light.

Pigeons perch on the outside of the villa roof; how do we stop that?

We fit spikes or mesh on the external roof edge. If the ledge is low we use suspended mesh hung on brackets instead of spikes fixed directly.

Do we need to clean and treat for parasites before fitting the deterrent?

Yes, absolutely. We remove all nests, droppings and feathers first, treat parasites, then fit the deterrent onto a clean, dry surface.
