The first reason

Repeated floors with separate balconies

Each storey may hold one or more flats with separate balconies, cavities behind the air conditioning units and gaps between the external boxes. Older windows and unprotected balconies leave gaps where pigeons hide and nest between adjacent units on the same facade.

Mixed facade heights and deep angles

Rooflines, setbacks and distributed air conditioning units create ledges, shadows and angles that are hard to reach. The building form itself offers the bird a safe perch in every recess and every horizontal edge.

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

What is different about Al Aziziyah Sub-Municipality

The Al Aziziyah sub municipality takes in the established heart of northern Jeddah, from the Al Hamra corniche on the Red Sea to Al Rehab east of King Abdullah Road. Its buildings date back decades, mostly mid rise apartment blocks over shops and closely packed restaurants along Makarona Road, Tahliah Street and Palestine Street, alongside villas and hotel towers near the shore. Sea humidity is high in the western districts, plumbing and drainage in the older blocks are ageing, and food outlets, hospitals and irrigated gardens are everywhere, conditions that favour cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes and rodents throughout the year.

Questions about this district

My flat is on the third storey. How do pigeons get onto the balcony?

They reach it by walking up the facade and landing on the ledges between floors, or flying to the cavity behind the external air conditioning box. Even high flats are not safe if the balcony door stands open or there is an accessible gap behind the unit.

Do all the apartment blocks in this area suffer equally from pigeons?

Older blocks and those close to shops, restaurants and markets are worse affected. New, well-maintained blocks are less susceptible, but any block in a busy commercial area remains exposed.

Do the birds pick specific spots on the building or do they spread everywhere?

They select specific spots first: the shaded angles behind the air conditioning units, the cavities between the external box and the fixed ledge, the gaps beneath the upper-floor balcony slabs. But if you leave one spot unprotected they quickly move there.

Many residents rent their flats and leave them empty for months. Does that make it worse?

Yes, significantly. Empty flats with open balconies and low building maintenance invite nesting and roosting. Unmonitored gaps between units give birds shelter that no one notices until the infestation is established.

We fitted netting to the balcony, yet pigeons still got in from behind it or somewhere else.

Balcony netting alone is insufficient. Birds enter behind the external air conditioning box, through ventilation openings, and through gaps between the facade and the ledge. Full protection requires closing every potential shelter.

After the spikes are fitted will the pigeons come back or move to another district?

Some leave, others relocate to nearby unprotected spots on the same building or the next one. The first nesting always leaves tiny parasites and mites. Precise protection from the start prevents both return and secondary infestation.
