Bird and pigeon control in Shaib Amir Wa Shaib Ali Makkah

Shaib Amir Wa Shaib Ali are two old ravines north east of the Grand Mosque behind Souq Al Layl, where ancient stone houses cling to the steep slopes of Jabal Khandamah. The northern expansion cleared large sections, but houses remaining on the slopes retain their original structure loaded with accumulated pigeon nests. Mountainous terrain and dramatically changing roof heights make treatment complex and done step by step.

  • Targeted, not broadcast

Product goes into cracks and runways, never sprayed across open surfaces.

  • Told before we start

What we will use, where it goes, and what to cover or move before we arrive.

  • A follow-up visit

We return after the first treatment, because what survives it does not show on the day.

  • Homes and businesses

Apartments and villas, and kitchens and stores that need a record of each visit.

Why they keep coming back in Shaib Amir Wa Shaib Ali

Old roofs on the slopes collect rainwater and flood runoff, pigeons settle in wind-sheltered corners, and multiple-layered old nests sit on most rooftops. The method is set out in full on how we approach Bird and pigeon control.

The first reason

Sharp hillsides with dramatically different heights

Houses climb the slope at vastly different elevations: one house's ledge might be one metre high, the next is three metres. A single deterrent does not fit all, and working at different heights is difficult and dangerous.

The second reason

Excavated land and construction sites beside the old houses

The northern expansion dug large areas beside the old houses, with construction sites providing temporary pigeon shelter. Birds move between the site and the houses easily, requiring repeated treatment.

The third reason

Ancient flood paths from the mountain

Jabal Khandamah is steep and powerful flash floods rush down after heavy rain. Old roofs may not withstand the water force, and metal deterrents need extremely strong fastening.

Shaib Amir Wa Shaib Ali on the map

Shaib Amir Wa Shaib Ali sits about 0.5 km from Al Qararah Wa Al Naqa and about 1 km from Harat Al Bab Wa Al Shamiyah.

Before treatment

The building decides which deterrent works

Ancient coral stone buildings climbing steep mountain slopes very close to the Grand Mosque, with large excavated tracts and open construction sites from the northern expansion, and winding streets difficult to reach.

A narrow concrete projection on a building facade

Ledge width

The winding roof ledge on the slope differs in width and angle, and deterrents need manual fitting to each house.

Outdoor condenser units on a building roof

Air conditioning platforms

Water from floods and heavy rain pools on relatively low roofs, and rainfall drainage patterns draw pigeons.

A twig nest sitting on a building projection

The nest itself

Old multi-layered nests sit on most rooftops, and small parasites inhabit every nest.

Bird droppings marking an exterior concrete wall

The droppings pattern

Droppings wash from high roofs down onto flats and houses below, causing resident complaints.

A mesh covered ventilation opening in an exterior wall

Openings and shafts

Old windows and openings are numerous and narrow, some opening inward only, making pigeon entry easy.

A water tank standing on a building roof

Around the roof tank

The water tank may sit on the roof or beside the house: pigeons perch nearby but water is usually protected.

How we work

  1. 1

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

  2. 2

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

  3. 3

    Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

  4. 4

    The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

What bird and pigeon control includes

  • A technician inspecting with a flashlight

    A recorded survey

Every ledge, condenser platform and shaft, photographed, with nesting separated from perching before anything is chosen.

  • A metal floor drain

    Nest removal and drain clearing

Lifted wet rather than swept dry, bagged closed, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

    Parasite treatment and sanitising

The nest position treated for ticks and mites, then the surface the droppings sat on sanitised.

  • A gloved hand applying bait into a joint

    Sealing and fitting the deterrents

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire, spikes or wire on narrow projections, and metal mesh across ventilation openings.

  • A clean kitchen counter after treatment

    Aftercare instructions

The condensate water, food left on the roof, and what should not sit beside a ledge if the attraction is to stay gone.

  • The visit report being written on a clipboard

A follow-up on tension and corners

Netting slackens and corners open over time; the visit corrects that and closes any new position.

What is different about Al Ghazza Sub-Municipality

Al Ghazza sub municipality wraps around the north and west of the Grand Mosque, from Al Shamiyah, Al Qararah and Shaib Amir round to Jarwal and Al Taysir. Large tracts were cleared for the northern expansion and the Rua Al Haram scheme, leaving excavated ground and open construction sites beside ageing blocks that now serve as dense seasonal lodgings in Jarwal and Al Taysir. Old flood paths still fall from Jabal Qaiqaan and Jabal Khandamah towards the mosque, and markets and eateries crowd Al Masjid Al Haram Road and Umm Al Qura Road.

Questions about this district

The house sits on a hillside and the one above it is much higher up. How do you fit deterrents to both?

We start at the bottom and work upwards gradually, treating each house separately according to its height and angle. Deterrents sit at different angles suited to each building.

The construction land beside the house is full of pigeons. Will they come back after treatment?

The site provides temporary shelter that will be built on or cleared. Treating the house now reduces the problem, and pigeons may move elsewhere if they cannot find a roosting place.

Souq Al Layl is very close and has lots of food. Is its impact big?

The market draws pigeons to the area, but if we remove their sleeping place on the house, they nest in another house or move on. Treating the whole area is better.

The street is narrow and the house sits high on the slope. How do you reach it?

We use ropes and safety harnesses: all work is manual. We may need to anchor a rope from the top for safety.

The old house has cracks in the wall and the foundation looks weak. Can you fit deterrents?

We check the foundation first: if it is strong beneath the crack, we fit deterrents carefully. If the foundation is very weak, we use an alternative method such as mesh over openings.

Very old nests and dust from the houses are falling onto the flat below. What do you do?

We clean all nests, dust and droppings completely, treat parasites with safe insecticide, then fit deterrents. Cleaning may take more than one day.
