The buildings here are built in steps up the mountainside, and their drainage runs downhill by gravity. The American cockroach climbs that route up from the floor drains, so we treat the connection points between flats rather than one flat on its own.

Behind the fridge and the water heater the warmth holds steady even through the mountain winter, and that heat speeds up the hatching in these cold old buildings.

Cramped kitchens push the fridge flush to the wall, so the gap behind it becomes dark, warm and close to water. It is where we always start the inspection.

Water before food

The worn pipes under Al Hajun's floors keep the bathroom damp. A cockroach can go days without food but will not stray far from that leaking water.

What you see at night

If you see a single cockroach on the light-well wall at night, the colony is most likely in the lower floor's drain or behind the shared water meter.

Questions about this district

My neighbour treated his flat, will they move to me?

Very likely, and it is common in Al Hajun's packed buildings. When one flat is treated, the cockroaches migrate through the pipes and light wells to the nearest source of water and warmth, which may be your home. That is why we prefer to treat the connection points between flats rather than one isolated flat.

My home is old with cracks, do you seal them before treating?

We treat inside the cracks first, because the eggs hide there, then advise sealing the wider splits behind tiling and cupboards once the bait has done its work. Sealing before treatment can trap a live colony inside the wall, which only delays the problem.

My flat is on an upper floor on the slope, is it different?

A little. Upper floors sit further from the street sewers, so the American cockroach is rarer there, but the German cockroach in the kitchen stays the most common, because it travels with belongings rather than through the drains. We aim the treatment according to your floor in the building.

I let a room to pilgrims, how do I protect the rest of the house?

We focus on the shared kitchen and bathroom and the points where luggage enters, since the eggs usually arrive with guests' bags. Bait along those routes stops breeding before it spreads to the family's rooms, and we re-inspect between one season and the next.

Is the old bathroom floor drain a main source?

Often yes in Al Hajun homes. Old floor drains lose their water seal and open a direct route from the sewer into the bathroom. We treat them and advise a tight cover, which cuts off the main path the American cockroach uses to climb up at night.

Do cockroaches come up from the old street drains?

On the ground floors near the old Ain Zubaida line, yes. The ageing sewer network beneath Al Hajun is connected and lets the American cockroach travel underground and then surface from the nearest drain. That is why we include the outdoor inspection chambers in the check.
