Why they keep coming back in Al Haram

In flats where the occupants change every few days, we notice the infestation returns from suitcases and small kitchenettes far more often than it returns from the walls themselves. The method is set out in full on Cockroach control in detail.

The first reason

Vertical spread through the towers

The German cockroach moves between flats along the water and waste pipes that run vertically through the tower, so treating your flat alone will not hold if the unit beside you or the one above is infested. We trace the gaps where pipes pass through walls and floors, and we seal them.

The second reason

Guests who change all year round

Being next to the Mosque means many of these flats are let short-term throughout the year, so a fresh infestation can arrive in the luggage of each new arrival. That is why we concentrate on entry points and the places where cases are stored, not on the kitchen alone.

The third reason

Restaurants on the ground floor

Many of the towers around Al Haram carry restaurants and bakeries serving pilgrims on their lower floors, and the heat and food waste they produce feed the American cockroach, which then climbs the service shafts into the flats above. We check that route before any other.

The species and the place decide the method

Al Haram sits at the lowest point of the valley, where the main drains converge. From there the American cockroach climbs up through inspection covers and the service shafts of the towers into basements, car parks and the lower floors above them.

German cockroach

The German cockroach is the one you will most likely meet in these tower flats: small, quick to breed, at home in furnished kitchenettes, and able to move between units along the shared pipework.

The American cockroach is larger and comes up from the drains at the bottom of the valley, rising through inspection covers into the basements and car parks of the towers, then into the lower floors.

Appliance heat

The water heaters and mini-fridges in serviced flats run without a break, and their steady warmth gives the cockroach the heat it needs to stay active and breeding all year.

The narrow gap behind the fridge in a let flat is warm, dark and rarely cleaned, which makes it the first place a cockroach settles out of sight.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, and leaks in the old shared pipework of the towers give it enough to survive even in a spotless flat.

What you see at night

Seeing a cockroach on the worktop at night usually means a whole colony has settled in the flat, because what appears after dark is a small fraction of what hides by day.

Inspect and identify

We work through the kitchen, the bathrooms and the drain runs, and establish the species, the harbourage points and the moisture keeping them there.

Treat the harbourage

Gel bait into joints and cracks, targeted spray where it is warranted, and dust in the dry voids behind appliances.

Close what can be closed

We point out the gaps, the drain entries and anything needing a plumber, because exclusion does more to stop a return than repeating the spray.

We come back once the surviving egg cases have hatched, check the points and re-treat where needed.

Questions about this district

My flat is let to pilgrims. Does that keep bringing them back?

Luggage coming and going does raise the chance of new cockroaches being carried in, but it does not doom you to a permanent infestation. We treat the source inside the flat and secure the entry points and the places where cases are stored, so each new guest does not become a fresh start.

My neighbour treated his flat but I still see them. Why?

In a tower the flats share pipes and shafts that run between units, so treating one flat on its own simply pushes the cockroaches next door through them. Treatment works far better when it covers the connected units, or at the very least we close the routes that link them.

There is a restaurant under my building. Is that the source?

Often it is, or part of it. The ground-floor restaurants near Al Haram give off heat and food waste that draw the American cockroach, and it climbs from them through the drainage and service shafts. We inspect that path and treat the points where it rises before we focus on your flat.

Can you treat while guests are staying in the flat?

Yes. We rely on targeted bait and a spray placed in cracks and along the routes the insects travel, which is approved for use in occupied spaces. That means the tower does not need to be emptied and guests in the neighbouring flats are not disturbed.

I am on a high floor. How do they even reach me?

Height alone does not protect you. The German cockroach climbs from floor to floor inside the vertical pipes and shafts, and the American cockroach rides the drainage lines. That is why we check where pipes pass into your kitchen and bathroom, even on the upper floors.

The flat is furnished with second-hand appliances. Did they come with those?

It is possible. Appliances and furniture moved into a furnished flat can carry eggs or live insects inside their warm cavities. At the start of treatment we check behind the fridge, under the appliances and in their fittings, because these are among the most common hiding places that travel in with the contents.
