Why they keep coming back in Al Haram

Towers around Al Haram pass one group of Umrah visitors into a room and then the next within days, so a mattress rarely sits idle long enough to let a treatment schedule follow a settled household's routine the way it would in an ordinary home.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

What is different about Al Ghazza Sub-Municipality

Al Ghazza sub municipality wraps around the north and west of the Grand Mosque, from Al Shamiyah, Al Qararah and Shaib Amir round to Jarwal and Al Taysir. Large tracts were cleared for the northern expansion and the Rua Al Haram scheme, leaving excavated ground and open construction sites beside ageing blocks that now serve as dense seasonal lodgings in Jarwal and Al Taysir. Old flood paths still fall from Jabal Qaiqaan and Jabal Khandamah towards the mosque, and markets and eateries crowd Al Masjid Al Haram Road and Umm Al Qura Road.

Questions about this district

Reception sofas in our hotel tower are used by waiting pilgrims all day, do they need checking?

Yes. The check covers any furniture people sit on for long stretches, not only guest rooms, so we look closely at the seams of the sofa and the corners of its arms where the insect hides between one sitting and the next.

Our hotel staff rotate onto the same beds between shifts, does that need separate checking?

Yes. Workers swapping the same bed across shifts is much like a house that takes in new guests every day, so we treat the staff floor as its own unit and inspect it on its own timetable, separate from the guest rooms below.

We stock mattresses and pillows ready to send up to rooms, do they need checking first?

Yes. Stock sitting in a storeroom is an easy place for the insect to survive without a meal for a long stretch, so pieces should be checked before they go up to a room, especially when they arrive from more than one supplier at once.

Our campaign office has a cushioned corner for elderly pilgrims between appointments, does it need checking?

Yes. Different people sitting on the same cushions through the day is enough to pass the insect along even without anyone sleeping there, so we check the cushion fill and its seams with the same care we give a bed.

We keep a bed in our shop's back store for staff resting between shifts, does it need checking?

Yes. Any bed used regularly falls under the check no matter where it sits in the building, and a storeroom bed gets the same attention as a bedroom in a home.

Pilgrims leave bags in our hotel's storage room for a few hours during the rituals, does it need checking?

Yes. Bags arriving from different cities and different journeys all sit together in one space, and even a short stay is long enough for the insect to move from one bag to the next, so the room and its shelves need a periodic check.
