Heat from the fridge and oven raises the warmth of the kitchen, and with walls already warmed by the neighbouring rock, the space behind the appliances becomes ideal for breeding.

The narrow gap behind the fridge is dark, warm and damp, and it is the first place we check in Al Hijrah's kitchens because the German cockroach hides there more than anywhere.

Water before food

A cockroach looks for water before food, so we check for leaks under the sink and the condensation on the pipes of the lower floors that gather the slope's damp.

We live on a ground floor at the foot of the mountain, does that raise the risk?

Yes. Ground-floor units against the rock take the damp running down the slope and sit close to the mountain's crevices and drains, so they meet the American cockroach more than the flats above. We concentrate on the mountain-facing openings and the outside drains as well as the inside of the unit.

The large cockroaches come in from outside at night, where from?

The large American cockroach shelters in the rock fissures of Jabal Thawr and in the outside drains. As the granite holds the day's heat, it moves after dark toward the warm walls and entrances. We seal its outdoor entry points and treat the drains so its return is cut off.

Our neighbour in the same block treated his flat, is that enough for mine?

Usually not. Adjoining flats share their waste pipes and light wells, so the German cockroach moves between them through the pipe openings. If only one flat is treated, the colony shifts next door and later comes back. It is better to treat the connected units and the shared run together.

Our building stands on a slope, does that change the treatment?

Yes. On a slope the water and waste run toward the lower floors, so the damp gathers there and the descending cockroaches reach it first. We begin treatment at the lower units and work upward, and we follow the drains that carry the moisture to the bottom of the building.

Do cockroaches get in through the air-conditioning gaps and light wells?

Yes. The air-conditioning gaps and the light wells between flats are common routes for the German cockroach, especially in the closely built blocks here. We inspect these gaps and seal around the pipes running into the kitchen to cut its path between the units.

There is open rocky ground near us, does it affect the home?
