The first reason

Drainage on rocky slopes

Jabal Thawr is solid rock and water does not flow fast through it, it creeps across the surface instead. Rain and drainage water fill the natural fissures and holes between rocks, and stay trapped there for days.

The second reason

Permanent moisture round building foundations

The building foundations are dug into the mountain, and the soil round the base stays damp because water from the slope collects there. This constant moisture offers ideal conditions for mosquito breeding through the year.

Natural cracks and weathered stone

Jabal Thawr's natural rock has deep fissures, water enters them and stays hidden from the sun. These natural shelters offer complete protection for mosquitoes and other insects.

Landmarks of Al Hijrah

Al Hijrah lies between Jabal Thawr to the east and Dhat An Nitaqain Street to the west, and access reaches it along this main thoroughfare. The Third Ring Road circles the district on one side, and Al Noor Specialist Hospital marks its location clearly.

Before treatment

Standing water and shade decide the method

Apartment blocks cling to the rocky mountain face, and water from rain and drainage flows slowly down the slopes instead of draining away quickly.

The daytime biter

The daytime mosquito hides in the rock cracks and the permanent shade under external stairs and in the gaps round the foundations.

How we work

Inspect and map the water

We walk the perimeter, the roof, the garden, the meter chambers and the condensate runs, record everything that holds water, and read the species from the breeding site and the time of biting.

Remove the water that can go

Empty, invert, cover: saucers, containers, old tyres and roof gullies. Every point that disappears is a treatment that never needs repeating.

Larval treatment, then the resting surfaces

Water that cannot be drained is treated so the larva never completes, then a residual goes under planting, beneath outdoor furniture and along low shaded walls.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the generation that was in the water on the first visit has completed, review every point we recorded and re-treat where needed.

What is different about Al Shawqiyah Sub-Municipality

Al Shawqiyah sub municipality runs south from the Third Ring Road to the city's edge on the Al Layth road and the Jeddah expressway. Planned districts such as Al Shawqiyah, Al Malik Fahd and Bathaa Quraish have wide streets, villas and apartment blocks, while schemes in Wali Al Ahd are being built out and informal housing in Al Ukayshiyah and Al Zuhur is being cleared. The vegetable market and livestock auction at Souq Al Halaqa, open construction sites, the rocky slopes of Jabal Thawr and sewers still being laid through the southern fringe offer exposed food, shelter and moisture.

Questions about this district

Why is humidity in Al Hijrah higher than in other apartment districts?

The hillside location means water creeps down the slope and pools round the building foundations. Natural rock retains water instead of draining it fast.

Do the mountain cracks collect mosquito breeding water?

Yes. The natural fissures in Jabal Thawr trap water and offer permanent mosquito shelter. These cracks need special treatment because they are deep and natural.

Is treating one flat enough or do I need the whole district treated?

One flat will not reduce mosquitoes if the moisture stays round the building base. Treatment focuses on the surfaces round the building and the cracks in the rock surrounding the block.

Is clearing the drainage outlets round the building essential?

Very much so. Pipes and openings at the foundation base may be blocked, trapping water and increasing dampness. Clearing drainage is part of the solution.

When are mosquitoes at their worst in Al Hijrah?

Moisture is present year round because of the hillside, but right after rain and through spring and summer the mosquito population is much heavier.

Is the water showing at the foundation base a leak or just normal ground moisture?

It could be both. A real leak from pipes or openings, and also natural moisture from water running down the slope. Both need treatment.
