Why they keep coming back in Al Huda

In Al Huda's blocks we notice that a flat treated on its own is reinfested quickly whenever the neighbouring flat on the same waste stack has been left untouched. The method is set out in full on what Cockroach control involves.

The first reason

One waste stack ties three floors together

In Al Huda's blocks the kitchen pipework drops vertically from the third floor to the ground, opening a continuous corridor for cockroaches between flats. That is why we follow the whole stack rather than the single flat, and close its openings at each floor we can reach.

The second reason

Old buildings, old cracks

The district was long known as Al Tahlawi, and its buildings are not new. Kitchen tiles have parted at the grout over the years, and the gaps around old pipework have widened. These cracks shelter the egg case where a surface spray never reaches, so we inject the treatment deep into them.

The third reason

Low ground and the manholes that feed it

Al Huda's low southern position leaves the drainage network slow to clear, so the ground-floor manholes stay damp. From them the large American cockroach climbs into the flats after dark, a different route from the German cockroach that we close at the drain openings themselves.

The three-storey blocks of Al Huda share a single vertical waste stack that links the kitchens of every floor. That dark, damp column is the first road a cockroach takes from one flat to the next.

The German cockroach settles in the kitchens of Al Huda's flats and moves between the three floors through the vertical waste pipes, which makes it hard to contain in one flat alone.

The American cockroach climbs up from the drain manholes on Al Huda's ground floors, where slow clearance in the low ground keeps them damp, and shows itself at night.

Appliance heat

The small flat kitchens in Al Huda keep the fridge and oven pressed close together, and the warmth of their motors draws cockroaches to the back of the appliances all year.

In a cramped flat kitchen the gap behind the fridge is dark, warm and close to the waste pipe, so in Al Huda it is the first place we check.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, so in Al Huda's flats we start with the damp under the kitchen and bathroom sinks before we deal with food.

Questions about this district

The flat above us was sprayed, so why did they come back?

Because the three-storey blocks in Al Huda share a single vertical waste pipe. When one flat is treated and its neighbour on the same stack is not, the cockroaches move into the untreated flat to escape the spray, then return. Treating the stack across more than one floor breaks that back-and-forth.

Is the ground floor different from the upper floors?

Yes. The ground floor in Al Huda sits closest to the drain manholes, so it takes the large American cockroach climbing up from the network, while the upper floors usually suffer the smaller German cockroach travelling through the kitchen pipes. Each one is treated in a different place.

Do all the flats in the building need doing at once?

They need not all be treated on the same day, but treating the flats that sit next to each other on one waste stack raises the result a great deal in Al Huda's blocks. Where that is not possible, we concentrate on sealing the pipe openings inside your own flat so they cannot return through them.

My kitchen is old and the tiling is cracked, does that matter?

A great deal. Al Huda is one of the older districts, and the parted grout lines and the gaps around the pipework in its kitchens become the hiding places where the egg case sits. We treat those cracks by injecting bait deep into them, because a spray on the surface alone never reaches that far.

I moved into a flat here and found roaches, why?

In Al Huda's blocks the infestation often arrives before the new tenant. It may be coming from a neighbouring flat on the same waste stack, or hiding in second-hand furniture brought in before you. We start by checking the kitchen and the pipework before deciding where it truly comes from.

Is the building's shared manhole part of the problem?

Often yes in Al Huda. The shared drain manhole under the building stays dark and damp, and it feeds the ground-floor flats with the American cockroach. We place the treatment at its edges and openings, not inside the flats alone, so the route is cut before they climb.
