Why they keep coming back in Al Kawthar

Appliance heat

New appliances run warm, and the motor housing of a recently bought fridge or dishwasher gives the German cockroach the heat it needs even in a kitchen barely a month old.

Water before food

Roaches settle near water before they seek food, and in a new villa that first water is often a guest bathroom or utility room that is barely used and holds damp.

What you see at night

A single roach crossing the tiled floor of a recently occupied home at night usually means it came in with the move or up a dry drain, not that it has bred there yet.

We work through the kitchen, the bathrooms and the drain runs, and establish the species, the harbourage points and the moisture keeping them there.

Questions about this district

I just moved into a new villa, why are there roaches already?

The building is new, but what you brought into it may not be. Roaches usually arrive inside used furniture, moving boxes and older appliances, and they can also climb up a bathroom drain that has never carried water and so has dried out. We work out which door they used before we treat.

Can bringing my old fridge and furniture in cause this?

Yes, and it is the most common source we see in Al Kawthar's new units. German cockroaches and their egg capsules hide in the back of a fridge, in its wiring, and in the drawers of reused cabinets. It helps to check each item as it comes in, before it is pushed into place.

There are empty flats in my new building, does that matter?

It can. In a building that fills up gradually, an empty flat next to yours may hold roaches that then cross the wall or travel a shared drainage riser into your home. That is why we look at the building rather than your flat alone, and treat the shared paths between units.

We have bathrooms we never use, could they be the source?

Often, yes. A floor drain that no water passes through lets its trap dry, and a dry trap opens a route straight from the sewer line for the American cockroach to climb. Pouring a little water down each rarely-used drain once a week keeps that door shut.

There is open land and construction next to us, does that bring roaches?

The vacant plots and building sites around Al Kawthar shelter the American cockroach, which searches for water after dark and slips into occupied units under door thresholds and through service openings. Sealing those gaps and treating the perimeter of the building cuts off its way in.

My kitchen is brand new, why do roaches keep appearing?

A new kitchen does not keep them out. The appliances run warm, and freshly fitted units leave narrow, warm gaps behind the fridge and under the cabinets. We treat those hiding places and the nearby water source, rather than only the roaches you see on the surface.
